Shell Ridge Results

November 22, 1998

by Trevor Pering and Syd Reader, meet directors

92 participants showed up to brave the muddy trails at this year's Shell Ridge meet. Below are the complete results. After the previous night's rain (while visions of canceled runs danced in our heads), the weather on Sunday was great: clear skies offering panoramic views of the surrounding areas.

The weather was quite a contrast to two weeks earlier, when we were attempting to set the courses. These same views allowed us to see a heavy rainstorm as it approached from the east. Needless to say, we found out that our indelible markers wouldn't write in the rain. We made up the time with several early-morning forays to complete and vet the courses.

Eventually, after some early-morning delays, the event went off rather well. The general consensus was that Shell Ridge is a nice park to run in, as evidenced by the fact that we had to turn down about five offers to pick up controls.

The White course was won by half of the Girl Scout team of Render, Molinari, Meier, Long, Salter, and Schnoll (they split up into two groups). Chris Dames had an outstanding run on the Yellow course, beating the nearest competition by 6.5 minutes. Randy Thomas had a similarly great run on the Orange course.

Scramble Format

The scramble format on the advanced courses ended up generating a variety of optimal and not-so-optimal route choices. After people ran, we conducted an informal exit survey of the routes that people took. Listed below are the top three routes (time-wise) for each scramble course. Each line contains the control number for one runner, listed in order from left to right (i.e. Thorsten first punched control 8, and then control 6, etc.).
   Short:
     8 6 7 9 13 10 4 2 1 3 5 11 12 (Thorsten Graeve)
     9 13 10 4 7 6 3 2 1 5 8 12 11 (Jonas Libell)
    12 11 5 1 3 2 6 8 7 4 10 13 9 (Werner Haag)

   Long:
    16 19 17 12 11 7 8 10 3 4 2 1 6 5 9 13 15 14 18 (James Scarborough)
    18 14 13 15 9 5 6 1 2 4 7 3 10 8 11 12 17 16 19 (Doug Stein)
    16 19 17 12 11 7 8 10 3 4 2 1 5 6 9 13 15 14 18 (Dan Stoll-Hadayia)
The route choices for the short course tended to be rather varied, indicating the difficulty of choosing an optimal route. From the results, there was no clear "best way," but people were forming rather strong opinions about "what they should have done" after they finished.

The winning paths for the long course, however, were more homogenous. Of notable exception is the path of Doug Stein, whose path is virtually the reverse of the other winning paths. The net effect of this reversal was to spread out the "return from the far side of the ridge" climb while slightly increasing distance. Given the speed of his fleet-footed competition, it is quite likely that his route was slightly better overall.
