I always enjoy setting courses at Spring Lake. The terrain has a wonderful mixture of technicality and accessibility unique to our local maps. The undulating, rocky terrain around the lake itself makes for challenging white and yellow courses, while the detail-ridden, slightly steeper hills of neighboring Annadel force advanced competitors to stay in close contact with the map or risk making large, hard-to-correct errors.
An added bonus to the event this year was the presence of pre-marked maps drawn on OCAD! A big "Thank You" to Bob Cooley for placing the Spring Lake map on OCAD and thus doing away with master maps and map corrections!
The weather was good for early November, and a larger turnout than expected helped make the event a success. Below are the complete results.
On the courses, the Hasenrick family sped through the White course in 37:21 to best a field of 26. First -timers Eddie Freyer (58:11) and Kathryn Buchan (63:03) led all Yellow course participants. Based on their excellent results and enthusiasm after the event, expect to see these two out at future events, maybe on Orange next time.
The Orange course toured the more complex terrain on the northeast portion of the map. Jouko Lahtinen proved he's ready to move up by blazing through the course in 46:03, followed by Randy Thomas in 70:45 and Michael Slavin in 76:29. Vivian Lee topped the women's field with a solid time of 88:12, followed by Rosalie Rybka and Sharon Evans. Michihiro Kamijima led the field on Green, posting an impressive time of 53:32, followed by Kent Ohlund (61:45) and George Minarik (63:37). Sarah Minarik beat out her mom Leslie to lead the women's field, posting a solid 87:32.
Every aspect of the event ran very smoothly with the help of a great group of volunteers. Judy and Dick Koehler helped set up the start and finish areas and ran early starts. Gary Kraght did his usual great job with beginners clinics and irate ranger negotiations (thanks Gary!); Michihiro Kamijima worked the later starts and helped break down the start area after everyone was out on a course. Tom and Sandy Guldman and helper worked registration. Vivian Lee helped work the finish chute. Dave Barr, Chris Taylor, Kelly Wells, and Cheryl Madson all picked up controls, and more people than I can name or remember helped with calculating finish times and posting results. Thanks again to all of you.
