More than 300 folks turned out this year, including 200+ scouts and about 116 BAOC participants. Below are results for both the BAOC event and the 7th annual Bay Area Scout Orienteering Championships - both the troop standings and the individual courses.
We would like to thank the East Bay Regional Park district, and the Briones Park rangers for their support. The scouts would like to thank BAOC for sponsoring the Scout-O event and helping scouting out. Thanks also to all the parents and scout leaders who took the trouble to bring to bring their scouts to a day of orienteering.
To all our helpers: Thank you VERY much. With such a large attendance, help was the most essential element of the meet, and you all did a wonderful job! To those I have left out (and I'm sure I have, since there were sooo many ad hoc volunteers), please accept my thanks, too. And of course, thanks to my family (Nina, Arwen, Malcolm, Kelsey, Wendy) for all their help and patience - stuffing packets, telephone calls, mailings, recruiting, results, and putting up with me and my absence.

The competition was organized in two parts: in the morning, there was individual competition according to skill level. Four courses were offered: Course 1 (white), Course 2 (yellow), Course 3 (yellow-orange) and Course 4 (orange). Scouts were required to compete in groups. The top three groups on each course were individual champions, receiving medals and certificates for their efforts. In the afternoon, there was a one-hour score-o'. The totals for each troop were computed from a combination of individual morning results and score-o'. Morning results were weighted based on time, and afternoon results were weighted based on number of correct controls found, with a lateness penalty.
Once again, we had an impressive improvement in orienteering skills amongst the Scouts. More and more scouts are doing the harder courses, and doing them well.
The undisputed Bay Area Scout Orienteering Champion is Jordan Boye from Troop 5 in Palo Alto, who won course 4, the orange course, in 82:50. His time would put him in third place amongst the regular orienteers! Orville Hrabe of Troop 912 in Sunol, who was last year's champ, was close behind, followed by Sean Winslow of Troop 5.
Girl Scouts Joanna, Jessica and Lindsay of Troop 3206 managed to beat Alex and Taka of Troop 241 by a few seconds, garnering themselves top honors and first place on course 1. Well done! Third place was taken by Alex, David and Niko of Troop 241.
The speed merchants of Troop 32 - Michael, Marek and Frank, blazed around a relatively tough Course 2, beating out kyle and Nathan of Troop 484 and the Vikings of Troop 264.
Course 3, which is in between yellow and orange standard, was won by Michael Sobczyk of Troop 32. Liz and Megan of Troop 757 ran a strong second on a difficult course, beating Danny and Don of Troop 24.
Dana, Austin and Sarah of Troop 290 collared top honors on the Adult course, which was also pretty tough. Alan and Steve of Troop 24 ran a good second, and John and Diane of Troop 434 were third. Since this was for bragging rights only, Dana, Austin and Sarah get to be the biggest braggers - well done!
Just for interest's sake, Michael Pisanski of troop 32 from San Jose blazed around the afternoon score course, punching 26 of 27 controls correctly in well under one hour. Many of those controls were orange level controls, so here is another example of a potential top-notch orienteer amongst the scouts.
Scout patches were distributed just after lunch. If anyone did not receive a patch, as well as a course patch, please contact me. Anyone who has not yet received a patch for last year's meet, also contact me: 925-934-6567.
