In spite of warnings about the impending bad weather for the weekend, the weather actually cooperated, giving us a pleasant day to enjoy the outdoors. (At least the weather cooperated in Palo Alto; some serious storm clouds loomed to the west, but were kept at bay). Many BAOCers showed up, along with some scout groups, some newcomers, and even an orienteer from CalTech! Below are the complete results.
There were many events at Stanford that day. It was the university's Founder's Day, with a processional and events at the main quad. As it was the start of a new school term, it was also the time for spring sorority rush. Also, the San Jose Clash pro soccer team played at Stanford Stadium, while they were waiting for construction work to be completed on their regular field (at SJSU). I didn't hear about anyone having problems with traffic or parking, which had been my biggest worry.
The club was kept busy as well, with a members' meeting and BAOC 20th-birthday social following the meet.
The campus has undergone massive changes since the map was field-checked in late 1994. Besides the changes typically undergone by an urban park (new trails, obscured trails, changes to manmade objects), there has been massive construction work, with some new buildings replacing other buildings as well as with earthquake retrofitting projects for many buildings. This made fieldchecking and course setting a challenge; it also made it challenging for an orienteer to record all of the map corrections(!). Hopefully a revised map would make some portions of the campus useable again for orienteering. Stanford is an enjoyable place - it is friendly enough for newcomers and novices; it is also nice to have a place where one can orienteer without worrying about hills!
There are many people that helped with the event. Lans Taylor provided advice and gave heads-up warnings about issues (such as the Founder's Day festivities). Manfred Kopisch, as well as being the assistant meet director, set the Start-O, Orange, and Long Orange courses (does that average out to a yellow course?). Providing assistance the day of the event were Nancy Lindeman and Tony Pinkham, who both taught multiple beginner clinic sessions, Alan Glendinning and Meg Gerstner, Julie and Kelly Wells, Ev and Jean Beuerman, Jill Custer, and especially Mike Maughmer, who graciously decided not to orienteer at all and continued working the finish well past his scheduled shift. Thanks also to those folks who pitched in when there was a bit of a crunch: Leslie Minarik, Steph Maclean, and Robert Lewis.
