A group of 165 orienteers came to this year's meet at Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. This year we entered the park using a more southerly location in order to ease parking concerns (by utilizing another park's lot!) and give better accessibility to some of the more forested and technically challenging terrain within the park. One shortcoming to the new site was the lack of a suitable trail loop for White, but a short and well-streamered route through the forest allowed for an easy connection. The courses were deliberately designed to be less physical than last year's, prompting about twice as many people to brave the Blue course this time.
We were also fortunate to have perfect weather for the event; a cooling mist was blowing most of the morning, a great improvement from last year's blast furnace. Those runners on the Brown/Red/Blue courses were treated to Thorsten's grave sense of humor, as well as the answer to the puzzle of why we had that one Blue stub left over at last year's meet.
Roy and Susan Want wasted no time in introducing 11-week old Becky to the joys of orienteering, although she apparently wasn't as excited as most of us and slept through the entire endeavour.
In the competition, James Scarborough easily topped a strong field on Blue with a time of 58:27, while Tapio Karras narrowly edged Gary Carpenter on Red. On Green, Joe Scarborough completed the family sweep with a win in a time of 52:57.
On Brown, Scandanavian exchange student Erik Ohlund turned in an impressive time of 29:10 while Peter Rexer blazed through the Orange course in 57:15, edging CROC's Ian Ramsey and leaving the rest of the field at least half an hour behind.
On Yellow, the team of Marsha Jacobs and Leslie Minarik, normally advanced orienteers, ran the the Yellow course for injury rehabilitation in a time of 44:10, while the Bergen/Jay team captured the White crown in only 20:41.
On the Start-O course, 11 year old Anni Larrson found all 8 controls with no help in the speedy time of 4:10.
As always, the meet could not have been a success without the cheerful and capable assistance of many volunteers. Specific thanks go to:
Thanks again, and apologies to anyone I may have omitted from the list. The helpful cooperation of the MPROSD rangers and staff is also gratefully acknowledged.
