29 teams consisting of 61 participants came out to the coast this past Sunday for a day of orienteering among the sunny hillsides of Wilder Ranch State Park. Most of the teams were signed up for the six-hour Rogaine, which, after a slight organizational delay, got off without a hitch. A bit later the three-hour teams got started, and peace and quiet finally descended on the event headquarters.
The three-hour teams were supposed to be out until well after lunch, so it came as quite a suprise when, after just over three hours, the six-hour team of Steve Gregg and Andy Staatz came flying through the finish and collapsed in the shade. They had managed to pick up all 25 controls in nearly half the time allooted! Things picked up soon afterwards as both three-hour and six-hour teams started coming back to the finish. A total of ten teams managed to get all of the controls, and none of the six-hour teams came back in overtime - I guess bribing them with offers of cold soda to the first ten teams back to the finish worked!
In the six-hour event, first place goes to the team of Steve Gregg and Andy Staatz, who get to take home the BAOC Rogaine Trophy until the next Bay Area Rogaine. In second place and less than 30 minutes behind are Syd Reader and Van Boughner, followed by Kent Ohlund and Bill Quanrud in third. First place in the mixed category and fifth overall were Brian Moore and Sharon Evans, followed by Derek and Steph Maclean (sixth overall) and Dan Green and Christine Shirley (ninth overall). First place in the women's category goes to Marsha Jacobs and Meg Gerstner. In the three-hour event, Bill and Joe Papendick took first place, followed by Sam and Dwight Freund and Matti Lainema and sons.
