The object of the score course was to take as many of the 27 controls as possible within the hour allowed. There was a one point penalty for each 30 seconds overtime. Two men came up with routes that got them around all the controls and back to the finish with only seconds to spare. Derek Maclean nipped Gary Carpenter by 16 seconds for the win. Aileen Abernathy was the top woman with a very competitive 18 in 59:48. I was very impressed by the large numbers of runners who came streaming towards the finish within only two or three minutes of the witching hour . Two of the four that got all the controls were the early runners Steve Gregg (recovering from a triathlon the day before) and rising star Adam Smith who probably sacrificed a few points to make sure all the bags were there for the rest of you.
The score course commemorated the establishment of BAOC's permanent course in 1983 by utilizing all but three of the original controls. Since this was familiar ground to many, the main objective was training rather than competition and I was happy to hear remarks from several that they actually worked on some training.
Special thanks to the vetters Pat Roth, Bruce Wolfe and Bill Straka and to the dozen or so who pitched in on the day making my job pretty easy. I would also like to thank the Oakland Recreation department for allowing the use of the park and picnic facilities gratis.
Bill Straka put in a lot of time on the start-O map and had only one competitor to enjoy it. But, hopefully, the map will be much used in the future. Here is his account of that one-person race:
While the big folks were dashing about the hills, Robin Leadbetter (F3.5 class, yes, 3 1/2 years old) ran the Start-O' course, finding all 10 controls in a time of 20 minutes (with a little assistance from Mom). The course went around the periphery of the meadow and allowed exploration of redwoods and bushes and lots of enjoyment of the sunshine and fine weather. Robin highly recommends a white broadbrimmed hat (with ribbon) as essential orienteering equipment. The modest winner declined futhur comment.
