Writeup by Steve Gregg

Over 100 intrepid orienteers ignored the threatening weather forecast and journeyed to Point Pinole for this year's Sprint Championships. Fortunately the early-morning showers ended by 8 AM, and by the time the event began at 9:30 it had turned into a pretty good day for orienteering.

Unlike last year's near-perfect conditions, this year the above-average rainfall leading up to the event left the terrain a bit soft for really fast running. Nonetheless, the top three Prologue runners still negotiated the 2.9 km course in right around 5 min/km. As expected, Eric Bone, Syd Reader, and Vladimir Guisatnikov were in the top three spots after the Prologue, with Wyatt Riley only three seconds back in fourth place. After Wyatt there was a 46 second gap back to Martin Kunz in fifth place, so it seemed clear that the fight for the three medals would take place among the top four.

However, the Chase did not generate a whole lot of drama, as the time gaps between the top three runners did not change much throughout the course. As this was Eric's first time on the map, it is particularly impressive that he was able to hold off the chase pack and win the event by a 28 second margin. Vlad did manage to cut the gap to Syd to 5 seconds early in the Chase course, but then faded a bit and Syd took the silver medal by 12 seconds. Vlad gradually increased his gap on Wyatt throughout the chase and took the bronze medal by 30 seconds. The fastest time on the Chase course was turned in by Francois Leonard, who lost about a minute at a small ruin on the Prologue course that some people claimed was slightly mismapped (I'll have to check that the next time I visit the park) and started the Chase in 7th position. He moved up to 5th place by the end of the Chase and without the earlier error might have been in contention for a medal.

On the women's side, newcomer Claire Warner took first place by a minute over longtime star Penny DeMoss. We hope Claire will be a regular attendee at future events. Marie-Josee Parayre took third place. As usual, the unsettled weather kept attendance down on the White and Yellow courses. The white course was won by Jennifer Willis, and Gary Kraght beat out William Gilmore by 10 seconds to win the yellow course.

I hope the butterfly loops added some interest to the event. Unfortunately, that entire hillside was burned by the park sometime last fall, and so the terrain containing the loops was quite a bit more open than I would have liked it to be. Next year expect the butterfly to be earlier in the course, in the more forested part of the map.

A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the event. Kelly Wells, Bruce Wolfe, and Ev and Jean Beuerman all vetted the courses before the event. Ev and Jean also helped the day of the event itself. As usual, Harold and Penny DeMoss arrived early to help set up all the rain tents at the staging area, and picked up bags after the event ended. Vivian Lee and James Wilson ran registration flawlessly. Terry Farrah gave beginner's clinics, and Martin Kunz and Frank Markowitz ran courses early so they could help out later. Harold and Meg Gerstner helped at the Chase start, and hauled all your sweats back to the finish area afterwards. And my biggest thanks go to our new E-punch director Trinka Gillis, who had to learn how to set up the event software for this complicated, two-part event and also arrived at the park early to set up all the E-punch hardware. My apologies to anyone I have forgotten who stepped up to help.
