2003 SILVA U.S. ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS FALLEN LEAF LAKE, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE Back to Results Sep. 13-14, 2003 by Evan Custer, meet director The 2004 Silva US Orienteering Championships were held on a new map of Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe, on Sept. 13-14, 2003. Approximately 350 people attended, including competitors from many parts of the US and a few foreign countries. It was a two day combined time classic distance event. The first day was also an International Orienteering Federation (IOF) World Ranking Event (WRE) for the M21 and F21 elite orienteers in the US who wanted to try to earn some world ranking points. There also was a full fledged green length course as a model event on Friday. The event center was at Camp Concord which was on the Fallen Leaf Lake map. Approximately 85 people stayed in the rustic cabins, and they were joined by another 100 participants for the Saturday night dinner and course review. The food was very good and plentiful, although there was some delay for later arrivals at the dinner since they had to cook up more food for the hungry masses. The assembly area and parking was at the Taylor Creek Sno Park. The first day had both remote starts (which required bussing the competitors to the start areas) and a remote finish. The finish for the first day had a gorgeous view of Lake Tahoe. The second day was a little easier logistically, because the start areas were a few minutes walk from the parking area, and the finish was at Camp Concord. Vladimir Gusiatnikov was the announcer at the finish for the second day. The terrain was approximately 65% runnable, either white conifer forest or rough open, and not particularly steep, while the other 35% was steeper and had considerable dead fall and slash, and therefore was much slower. There were multiple small pits mapped, usually the result of a tree having fallen over. The trail network was variable, as were the rock features, being plentiful in some areas and sparse in others. Hannu Haarma, former Finnish elite orienteer, designed the advanced courses. He said in his course setter's notes that the courses, particularly the first day, would be "demanding." I think everybody who ran those courses would concur. They were very challenging, and, particularly for the red and blue runners, were physically difficult because of large areas of deadfall and slash, which slowed running speed. Some of the courses were probably too long the first day. Fortunately, the next day, the courses were pretty much right on as to length (except perhaps for the red courses), and the terrain was much more open and runnable. Most people were very pleased with the terrain and courses on Sunday. Jay Hann designed the white and yellow courses, which were very good. I designed the orange courses. Again, Saturday's course was probably too long, but Sunday's was about right. Eric Bone from Cascade Orienteering Club (COC) won the first day's M21 event decisively, despite having made a number of small errors, and held onto his lead on Sunday to win the M21 Championship. Brian May, last year's winner, came in second, and Wyatt Riley, having a surprisingly good performance, earned the bronze medal. Interestingly, William Hawkins, who did not punch the penultimate control on Saturday because he thought he was doing so poorly and did not want to have his time recorded, ended up being the fastest runner on blue on Sunday, and would have come in third place for the championship had he not skipped that one control on Saturday. Erin Olafsen from Up North Orienteers (UNO) in New Hampshire, won the two day F21 title by having two consistent runs, coming in second on both days. Suzanne Armstrong, running for Cambridge Sports Union (CSU), won the silver medal, but only after challenging conditions both days. On Saturday, she did not find the 9th control, a pit with the control number 235, despite 3 attacks. However, she found a streamer with the number 235 on it on an (unmapped) pit (later found to be 31 meters away from the actual control), and decided that the control was missing so continued on. It turned out that the streamer was placed by the IOF controller, and never removed. The organizers decided that since this introduced an element of unfairness, that the control would be granted to her (and another person who had the same problem). Then on Sunday, she lost her SI card, and punched her map. The controls prior to the loss of the card were later interrogated and were found to have her card number recorded. Karen Williams, also from CSU, won the WRE event on Saturday, but then slipped to 3rd place on Sunday and won the bronze medal for the 2 day event. Michael Eglinski, from Orienteering Kansas (OK) and Jim Baker, running for UNO but now living in Alberta, traded first and second places on the two days, leading the field of the Red-Y runners, and came in first and second in M35 respectively. Thorsten Graeve from BAOC won the bronze medal in M35. On the Red X course, which consisted of M40 and M45 classes, Sergey Velichko from the Idaho City of Trees Orienteering Club (CTOC), had the fastest time both days and won M40. He finished 30 minutes ahead of Tapio Karras from BAOC, the silver medal winner. Bruce Wolfe, long time BAOC member, had the second fastest time on Red-X both days, and handily won the M45 category. Natalia Babeti from Chicago had the fastest two day time on Green-Y (first on Saturday and second on Sunday) and decisively won F45, coming in 45 minutes ahead of second place finisher Sandy Fillebrown (DVOA). Leif Anderson from Sammamish (SAMM) had the second fastest time for the two days, and he handily won M18. Other good performances on Green Y were Anneliese Steuben, formerly of BAOC, who won F20, Jennifer Knowles who won F35, and Eileen Breseman on F40. All three are from the Cascade (COC) club. The surprise of the weekend was the fact that Peter Gagarin, from CSU, long time US champion, came in 5th on the Green X course on Saturday, because of severe cramps. However, he managed to struggle through the pain on Sunday, and ended up with the fastest time on Green X on Sunday and earned the M55 silver medal. Ron Hudson, former BAOC member who now runs for LAOC, was the second fastest person on Green X on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday, won the gold medal in M55. The battle for the M50 gold was hotly contested, with Brad Whitmore from Susquehana Valley (SVO) having the fastest time on Green X on Saturday, but then had a bad day on Sunday, allowing Dave Enger from Sammamish (SAMM) to win gold with the second fastest time on Green X, just 1 minute behind Peter Gagarin, and dropping Brad down to the silver medal. Orlyn Skrein from the Rocky Mountain O Club (RMOC) had the fastest time on M60 on Saturday, but made a number of errors on Sunday, and dropped down to second, allowing George Walker from Western Connecticut (WCOC) to win the gold. Alex Kerr from Vancouver dominated the Brown X course, having the fastest time both days. However, since he is Canadian, he did not win the US championship medal on M65, which went to Peter Snell, former New Zealand Olympic gold medalist in 800 meters, and now a US citizen living in Texas. The second fastest time on Brown X was by Sharon Crawford of RMOC, who won the gold medal in F55. Other good performances were Lauren Wolfe from BAOC, who easily won the gold medal in F18 and Carol Schick-Lyda, from the Tahoe area, but who doesn't belong to a club or USOF, and therefore did not win F50 gold medal despite the fastest time. Ellyn Brown from the Arctic club in Alaska won the F50 gold. On the Brown Y course, Gary Kraght from BAOC had the fastest two day time to win the M-Brown class. Linda Moore, from Las Vegas, however, had the fastest time on Sunday, and just squeezed out Joan Roos from BAOC by less than 2 minutes to win the F60 class. Shirley Donald (Kamloops O Club in BC) won F65, Ruth Johnson (Orienteering Maine) F70 and Ken Lew (COC) M70. Malcolm Wyatt-Mair from the Bay Area demolished the competition in M16, winning the gold medal and coming in ahead of second place finisher Andy Strat by 35 minutes, just 3 minutes less than it took Malcolm to run the Sunday course. Franchesca Worsham from Texas hung onto the big lead she had on the first day to win the gold medal in F16, while Chelsea Waite from BAOC earned the silver medal, coming in first on Sunday, but not by enough to erase Franchesca's lead. The closest race of the weekend was on F14. There Karen Strat, formerly of BAOC but now living in Virginia and running for Quantico, edged out Kelsey Breseman from Cascade to win the gold by 7 seconds. Per Hjerrild, on a student visa and living in Phoenix for the year, but a Dane and member of the same club as Finn Arildsen, easily won M14 with a two day time of 61 minutes. Jukka Karras of BAOC won the M12 gold with a total 2 day time on white of 39:47. Lars Hjerrild was 28 seconds faster and won the M10 gold medal. Alison Campbell from DVOA won F12 gold, where Joanne Ledbetter from BAOC got the silver medal. Dana Breseman from Cascade won first place in F10. Here is the list of the US Champions:

The main complaints were about the map, particularly the first day. Many people thought that the vegetation was inconsistently mapped, particularly the dead fall, and to a lesser extent the individual fallen trees. Also, many of the pits were very shallow, about 0.5 m in depth, and IOF standard states that a pit should be at least 1.0 meter deep before it is mapped. Also, another problem was that some of the control markers were probably hung too low, particularly in the pits with surrounding heavy underbrush. The club purchased some additional aluminum stands before the event, but they were all of the short type, which work well in the Bay Area with its open terrain. With the low control stands, it was sometimes difficult to find the control, even though one could be relatively close. We should purchase a few additional taller control stands for situations like that. Also, there was a computer crash near the end of the first day, and Robert Lewis had to stay up until 11:30 pm Saturday night, merging the two databases in order to be able to get the cumulative times for the event on Sunday. Eventually, he was also able to recover the splits, which initially were thought to be lost when the computer crashed. This event could not have taken place without all of the help of many club members. In particular, I want to thank Hannu Haarma, the course setter for the advanced courses. He spent many weekends up at Tahoe designing and placing the controls, plus he ran and visited most of the controls early Saturday and Sunday morning to be sure the units were working OK. I also want to thank Jay Hann. He not only designed all of the white and yellow courses, both A meet and recreational, for both days, but also placed virtually all of the water at the controls, the starts, and the finishes by himself. This was a monumental task, as anyone knows who has had to lug water out into the field. He also supplied the excellent PA system used for the announcing and awards on Sunday and for the Saturday night dinner. Bob Cooley was invaluable as he was in charge of getting the area mapped, vetting all of the controls, helping to place controls and some of the water, plus checking many of the controls both mornings to be sure all of the EP units had turned on. Steve Beuerman did his usual excellent job of being the registrar, handling all of the last minute entries, and keeping all the bits of data correct. Ev and Jean Beuerman were the liaison with the Camp Concord staff, and handled the reservations and room assignments for the camp. They also helped with packet pick-up and recreational registration. Rosemary Johnson, Esther Heller, Scott Aster, Nancy Lindeman, and Sue Scarborough helped with recreational registration and packet pick-up. Robert Lewis wrestled with the not very intuitive electronic punching software, assigned all of the start times, and was at the download station for most of the event. He also had to deal with a computer crash on Saturday afternoon. He was helped by Jeff Lanam, Ananda Ranasinghe, Rosemary Johnson, Jill Custer, and Marsha Jacobs. Chuck Spalding had a very difficult job of directing the starts, with two start areas both days, and the multitude of workers necessary to provide the smooth process of sending the competitors off. Fortunately, he is a great detail person and handled the job superbly. Chuck was assisted by Andrew Masalkov, Arwen Wyatt-Mair, Beth Dixon, Bevan Waite, Bud Laird, Chelsea Waite, Cheryl Madson, Eglute Martisiute, Gary Kraght, Gavin Wyatt-Mair, Ian Tidswell, Jim Waite, Kelsey Wyatt-Mair, Kent Ohlund, Malcolm Wyatt-Mair, Mike Fleishman, Milda Ragenaite, Nick Corsano, Nina Wyatt-Mair, Rich Parker, Terry Farrah, Thorsten Graeve, Trevor Pering, Vic Revenko, Vicki Woolworth, and Vivian Lee. George and Leslie Minarik and Matthias Kohler did the mammoth job of setting up and tearing down of all of the start and finish areas all three days. Harold and Penny DeMoss did their usual excellent job of recruiting and organizing the control pick-up, and did not return until 6:45 pm on Sunday with the last control. They were helped by David Ingram, Nancy Lindeman, Shirley Donald, Peter Graube, Kelly Wells, Steve Gregg, Mark and Sarah Petersen, Janet and Katie Petersen, Dwight Freund, Jennifer Kerr, Lynn and George Walker, Vladimir Gusiatnikov, and Bud Laird. Dan Greene and his staff, Patty Clemo, Wes Erck, Joe & Emily Farrah, Tapio Karras, Mike Poulsen, Syd Reader, Karen Williams, handled the finish, taking back up times for the A meet competitors and doing the time calculations for the recreational crowd. Mark Blair was the equipment and sign guru. Vladimir Gusiatnikov did a superb job of announcing on Sunday providing excitement for the crowd and finishing runners. Joan Roos, assisted by Dave Ingram, provided first aid. Scott Donald was the IOF advisor and provided valuable input on the design of the WRE courses. Ed Scott was the USOF course consultant. Ben Wahlstrand spent many hours keeping the web site up to date with the late breaking information. Tony Pinkham developed the flyer for the event, and Nancy Lindeman provided publicity. Scott Aster provided beginner's clinics. Gary Kraght helped with the awards. Wes Erck was in charge of search and rescue, which fortunately did not have to be utilized. And finally, I want to thank Lori Allessio of the Forest Service and Brian Wells of Camp Concord for their help in producing this event.
