SPRING LAKE Back to Results June 22, 2003 by Scott Aster, meet director About 160 participants came out on a beautiful, sunny day to enjoy some fine orienteering at Spring Lake park. Most of the attendees were first or second timers, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Even though it was quite warm, many people finished one course and decided to try another before heading home. None could match the endurance of BAOC regular, Steve Gregg though. Steve ran the Orange, then the Yellow, then the White, and later picked up controls! I can also add that Steve had the fastest time for all three courses. As an added challenge, I set a memory-o course, and a 1.5km sprint style course. Only two people tried either variety though, so I must put on my thinking cap and come up with something even better for next time, to draw advanced orienteers. Creative suggestions are always welcome! While Spring Lake is tightly interwoven with trails and roads, the terrain is actually quite intricate, with hundreds of pits, depressions, knolls and confusing bare rock surfaces to challenge all participants. While I tried to make the Orange course as technical as possible, I was very impressed with the times and lack of DNF's on the course. I apologize to Yellow and Orange course participants for the convoluted finishing controls for their courses. I had already designed courses extending slightly into Annadel State Park, when the Annadel rangers told me we could not cross the park boundary. To fix this dilemma, I bent these two courses into odd shapes to keep them within the boundaries of Spring Lake park. This resulted in having a couple of legs mostly on trail, and I used a shared control which had a fair amount of Poison Oak around it. I hope everyone successfully avoided the P.O. there! I also had to move the last control for these two courses due to P.O., placing the control about 20 meters from the middle of the control circle, though in plain view. Fortunately, no one seemed to complain about the placement (they were warned about this at the start). No successful event occurs without some great support, and I certainly had that! Gary Kraght and George & Pat Aster handled registration. Judy Koehler did non-stop clinics for over 2 hours, Joan Roos and Mike Mahoney handled the starts most of the day. Vivian Lee and George and Leslie Minarik worked finishes and posted results, and Steve Gregg, Wes Erck, and a very friendly newcomer whose name I forget helped with control pickup.
