The 2003 Tahoe 3 Day was held at Spooner Lake and Burton Creek State Park on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, 2003. About 150 people participated each day at the event. The participants were fortunate in having glorious weather, especially after concern about the possibility of having to cancel the event because of late spring storms, which dumped about one third of the area's entire seasonal snow fall in the month of April.
The Saturday and Sunday events were a combined time two day classic distance race, the first day being held at Spooner Lake and the second day at Burton Creek. On the blue course, Andy Dale handily beat out the rest of the field with a sterling second day run with a time of 1:15:27 for a combined two day total of 2:25:33. Andy had faltered a bit on Saturday, when he came in second a little over a minute behind Bruce Wolfe, who had a very good run, especially considering that he is 48 years old.
The red course provided a very close race, with Kent Ohlund coming in 16 seconds ahead of Ben Hall from the Cascade club on Saturday. However, Kent made several errors on Sunday, coming in about 1 minute behind Ben over the two days, giving Ben the win with a total time of 2:11:06. Steve Gregg, who was unable to run on Saturday, had the fastest time on red on Sunday with a time of 58:13. Annabel Valledor won the first day in F21, but then Anna Voegele, from Truckee and formerly of Sweden, had a good day on Sunday, defeating Annabel by about 16 minutes. This was not good enough, however, to compensate for Anna's huge error on Saturday, in which she ran off the map.
Hannu Haarma smashed the green field on Saturday with a spectacular run, completing the course in 45:16, almost 5 minutes ahead of second place finisher, Brad Whitmore, from Susquehanna Valley. However, on Sunday, the tables were turned, and Brad was the fastest person on green with a time of 51:51, almost 10 minutes ahead of Hannu, who had about that much time in errors. However, each was strong enough to win their respective classes, Brad in M50 and Hannu in M55. Paula Whipple, from ORCA (Oregon-Cascade, centered in Corvallis, OR), was the fastest woman on green.
The brown course was dominated by Alex Kerr from Vancouver. He had the fastest times on both days, completing Sunday's course in a spectacular 38:53, or 10 min/km, not bad for a 68 year old. Linda Moore, Lauren Wolfe, and Marsha Jacobs all finished the 2 day brown course with a time of about 2 hr, 11 min.
All of the Wyatt-Mair kids moved up one course, and they all won medals. Malcolm won M16 on orange and Kelsey F14 on yellow. Arwen came in second in F18 after Lauren Wolfe on brown. In M 12, Bevan Waite won the first day, but was not able to keep his lead overall when Jukka Karras had a good run on Sunday to win the class.
On Monday, there was a short course event, with the winning times of 25-30 minutes, with multiple controls in a highly technical area, requiring constant concentration and quick decisions. Andy Dale again had a good day with a time of 30:31, almost 9 and a half minutes ahead of second place finisher, Bruce Wolfe.
The red course showed that consistency pays off. Derek Maclean would have handily won the event since he had the fastest splits on every control except for number 6, in which he made a 12 minute error, almost impossible to recover from in a short course. Meanwhile, Dan Greene was the tortoise who beat the hare, having the fastest time (31:41) on red, but only having the fastest splits on 2 of the 16 legs. He was very consistent, probably making only one minute of errors for the entire course. Katrin Lorenz, from Germany, was the first woman in F21, with a time of 42:11.
Hannu again showed his speed, winning the green course in 23:01, or about 8.5 min/km. Brad Whitmore came in second with a time of 25:55. The first woman was Vicki Woolworth.
Alex Kerr again took top honors on brown by completing the 2.1 km brown course with a time of 25:40. Lauren Wolfe was the first woman with a time of 29:46.
Malcolm Wyatt-Mair won the 2.75 km orange course with a time of 25:03, and Kelsey Wyatt-Mair won the yellow course in 44:41. Jukka Karras ran the 2.55 km white course in a time of 17:18, or almost 7 min/km.
The event seemed to run very smoothly, and the award ceremony finished before noon on Monday, allowing people to get an early start back to the Bay Area to beat the holiday weekend rush home. The only problems were 8 SI units failed on Sunday (most of which were probably due to the fact that the course setter was not aware that he should not wear a cell phone while placing the controls) and 4 units failed on Monday. All were replaced before the majority of the runners started. There was also an incident with one of the neighbors on Monday, who complained that one of the controls was too close to the back yard fences of the nearby residents. We put up some "Keep Out" tape about 20 meters from the fence, and this seemed to alleviate the situation.
Olivia Graeve, the social chairperson, organized a dinner at the Blue Agave Restaurant in Tahoe City on Saturday night. About 50 people attended the event, which allowed each person to order off the menu. Nancy Lindeman also organized a pot luck dinner at the Sugar Pine Point campground on Sunday evening, and about 30 people came. Both events were very successful and people seemed to enjoy themselves a lot.
Of course, a three day A meet would not have been possible without the help of so many people. I particularly want to thank Thorsten Graeve, who set Saturday's courses, vetted Sunday's courses, put out most of the controls on Saturday, and many for Sunday and Monday, and programmed all of the EP units. Also, Dan Stoll-Hadayia did yeoman's work by designing both Sunday's and Monday's courses, and helping to hang controls for Saturday also. Bob Cooley vetted Saturday's and Monday's courses, printed up all of the maps, and helped place water at Burton Creek, managing to get his 4 wheel drive vehicle stuck in a snow bank in the process. Steve Beuerman again did a great job with A-meet registration, and Ev and Jean Beuerman did their usual stupendous job with recreational registration and helping with packet stuffing and distribution. George Minarik led a great group of workers at the start, including Leslie Minarik, Rosemary Johnson, Cheryl Madson, Jill Custer, Louise Madrid, Rachel Care, Rich Parker, Scott Aster, Gary Kraght and Dennis Wildfogel. The finish was manned by Dan Greene and his staff including Kent Ohlund, Matthias Kohler, Chuck Spalding and Tapio Karras. Jeff Lanam was in charge of electronic punching and was helped by Bill Straka, Ananda Ranasinghe, Glenn Ferrari, Jennifer Kerr, Patty Clemo. (I particularly want to thank Glenn, since he came all the way from Los Angeles just to help out even though he does not orienteer.) Bill Pappendick and Matthias Kohler were invaluable in helping to set up and take down the starts, finishes, tents, etc. Ben Wahlstrand kept the web site up to date with late breaking announcements; Mark Blair was in charge of equipment procurement and signage; Marsha Jacobs assigned start times; Bill Straka was in charge of search and rescue; Joan Roos handled first aid; Tony Pinkham created the flyers and advertisements; Nancy Lindeman and Lucy duPertuis helped with publicity; Stew Hintz, Mark and Janet Petersen, Steve Gregg, Terry Farrah and Ian Tidswell gave beginner's clinics and adventure racer's clinics; and last but not least, control pickup was handled by Peter Graube, assisted by Nancy Lindeman, Ben Hall, Dave Koskenmaki, Chuck Lyda, Mark Prior, Jennifer Peck, Mike Prindiville, Carol Schick-Lyda, Dan Schnurrenberger, Jim Waite, Vicki Woolworth and three or four helpers, Dwight Freund, Stew Hintz and Gavin Wyatt-Mair.
