Emerald Hills

Redwood City
Feb. 9, 2003

by Nancy Lindeman, meet director

Below are the final results. A map of all the controls is also available. Over 130 people showed up on a beautiful winter day for our Emerald Hills Street-O Event on February 9th. Steve Beuerman set some interesting advanced courses using the "Western Massachusetts Rules" instead of a Score-O. Participants needed to find any 7, 14, 21 or 28 controls, depending on how long they wanted to be out on the course. There were no bonus points for extra controls. Six of the 30 Advanced controls were in nearby Edgewood County Park.

The biggest problem of the day was that the bathrooms never were opened. We paid the Redwood City School District $31 per hour for 4 hours so that we could have the bathrooms unlocked. There was a mix-up, and the man that Alan talked to from the School District said he was sorry and that they would refund our money and that next year would be better.

There were some concerns about some of the clues so I went out to recheck the ones in question.

#14 Question: Color of the gate at 777?
     Choices: Reddish, Yellowish, Brownish.
The gate at 777 was Brownish. The one right next door at the
house without a number in front was green, but green was not
      one of the choices.

#18 Question: Number on Pole S of intersection?
     Choices: 4134, 6987, 2531.
The correct number was on the pole, but one of the incorrect
numbers was the number that was on the house near the
      intersection.

#24 Question: What Animals are at 776? (surrounding the mailbox)
     Choices: Lions, Tigers, Bears.
      They were male lions.

Since this was not the United States Street-O Championship, we decided to give credit to all four people that "mispunched" a control. In the future, we could correct their answers while they wait and if they had a wrong answer, we could question them to see if they really were at the control site. The answers should not be tricky, and Steve, Sharon and I really tried to make the choice clear if you were at the control site.

The medium course, the most popular of the advanced courses, was won by Tapio Karras in 58:58. Terry Farrah was the first woman at 1:31:02. Shirley Parlan Pierce, who was training for the 7-hour Rogaine at Briones, was the second woman, finishing in 1:55:23.

Dennis Wildfogel was the first finisher on the Long course with a time of 1:37:37. Ian Madsden, Thorsten Graeve and Dan Greene had very close times at 1:45:00, 1:45:20 and 1:45:50!

Steve Gregg, Mr. Street-0, had the fastest time of the 10 finishers of the Longest, about 24K, course. It wasn't an easy choice on which 2 controls to skip on the Longest Course. Four people skipped #27, three skipped #20, and three skipped #4.

All six on the Long Course and all 10 on the Longest Course were men. Where were all the women? Penny?

The Short Course had Johanna Merriss on top at 40:01, with Meg Gerstner right on her heels with 42:57.

The 2.4-km White Course winner was the group, H & L Bunting. There were many children on the White Course. One of the young participants, first time orienteer, second Grader, Max Wiegant, read all the clues for his group and led his sister, father and grandmother around the white course.
