Bon Tempe

It was a dark and stormy night... well, it was daytime and there was some light, but it was definitely stormy! The first annual BAOC volunteer appreciation event for 2002 was held on the weekend of some of the biggest storms to come through the area in a long time, making for quite an adventure. The two-day event was marked by typhoon winds and heavy rain on the first day, and heavier rains on the second day, making for challenging courses as competitors battled the wind, rain, slippery mud, and falling trees. Many competitors reported having a wonderful time because usually dry creeks were full with water, the air was filled with fresh and clean scents, and there's nothing like the crack of a breaking tree to get your adrenalin pumping! Unfortunately, there wasn't much after-course socializing because people were desperately trying to get out of the rain.

The course format was a short/medium/long choice, where the short course had many controls (18) placed close together, and the long course was a combination of the short and medium courses run in a two-loop format. The short course was designed to be something different -- to get people to think quickly and not fall into the long-leg routine. The two loops of the long course allowed a full-length blue course to fit into a smallish park. It's hard to tell if this was a "success" or not, but informal exit interviews showed that people enjoyed the short format and the long course was just about the right length.

On the downside, the attendance was way below the park limit, and nobody ran the offered yellow-orange course. There were two probable reasons for this -- first, the event was restricted to club volunteers, who on average run the more advanced courses, and second, only the truly advanced (or adventuresome) were likely to brave the weather. This is something to think about for future events -- Bon Tempe is always plagued by storms, and with a restricted attendance it makes it even more difficult. I also had to turn away a few first-timers (looking to do a white course -- but I pointed them at the BAOC schedule and answered many of their questions).

Despite the rain, most people who did show up ran the long course. Syd Reader was the overall winner at 1:26:05, with Thorsten Graeve and Steve Gregg coming in second and third, respectively. Several people ended up with a DNF, mostly because their glasses were fogging up and they couldn't see the map!

Much thanks to Martin Taylor who set the yellow/orange course and helped with many logistical considerations. Vicki Lee helped on the days of the event with registration/starts/finishes. And thanks to Syd Reader who, as the overall winner of the event, was forced to stay and do control pickup.

Below are the results.
