This year's event and social on the Stanford campus was a great success. Over 160 people turned out to enjoy the fine weather (quite a pleasant change from last year's social event). The Stanford Orienteering Club hopes everyone enjoyed themselves, and thanks everyone who helped out. See the complete results below.
Quite a few newcomers came and tried the beginner courses. On White, Dan Eggerding led the 21 entries with a time of 36:30, over two minutes ahead of the second place group. Maria Kourakina had a very similar time of 36:14 on Yellow to win the Yellow course, leading by a minute.
On the Orange course, Victoria Lee, who has recently rediscovered orienteering, edged Al Parmantier and Phil Lovalenti by 25 seconds, with a time of 35:11. The Score-O course was won by Vladimir Gusiatnikov, who grabbed 25 of the 26 controls with 47 seconds left in the 60-minute time limit. Doug Stein and Francois Leonard both found 23 controls, to take second and third, respectively.
Sticking to tradition, the Night-O was again a 50- or 70-minute Score-O. On the 50-minute time limit, Vladimir again took the top place, finding 18 of the 20 controls and coming in 11 seconds overtime (to lose one point). He narrowly beat Evan Custer, who returned with 16 controls and just over a minute left. On the 70-minute Night-O, Thorsten Graeve easily located all 28 controls with over 5 minutes remaining. His closest competition came from Juha Heinonen and Tapio Karras, who both finished with 27 controls, but were 7 and 9 seconds overtime, respectively.
In the evening, there was a great turnout for the annual social. Olivia Graeve made sure that we didn't end up with only desserts, as we did last year. There was a lot of really good food. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and at one point we all tooks turns introducing ourselves. There was even a small group of people still talking when I left to go home.
And during the social, the 2002 Distinguished Service Award was given to Harold and Penny DeMoss (well, not in person, as they couldn't make it). They volunteer at almost every meet they go to, even if they don't run. In particular, they are the backbone of our control pickup crews at most events. Congratulations, Harold and Penny.
I'd like to thank all the people who helped out on Saturday. I may have missed some of you while I was running around, but here are the ones that I know of:
