This year's Golden Goat (the 7th!) was held in true Goat terrain, the vertiginous Las Trampas Regional Park. And the Goat made good use of those contours. The course statistics for the Goat were truly fearsome - 10.3km and 750m of climb (that's almost ½ mile of climb, and that is without the walk to the start!) But while maintaining the reputation for toughness, the Goat was in a good mood! The weather was cool, and the Kid, the first loop of the Goat (and 'only' 7.3km and 495m of climb) offered an alternate route to success. And what's more, as tradition dictates, following was allowed, and participants could skip one control. Truly the Golden Goat is awesome, but most merciful and glorious! You can check out the course yourself by clicking here.
Overall, 27 finished the full Goat (38% of the total), and 34 finished the Kid (48%). In the front of the pack, Syd Reader had an awesome run, finishing in 98 minutes. Except for the very first control, he led the whole way, and held a 4 minute lead over Vladimir Gusiatnikov after the Kid, increasing to 6 minutes by the finish. Vladimir's excellent performance was further 'enhanced' by his control card, which was far and away the most smelly and disgusting of the event (hint to future event directors: Beware - tyvek control cards hold odors really well!). Wyatt Riley came in third, his otherwise solid run hampered by a sub-optimal choice for skipping controls. On the women's side, Penny DeMoss continued her domination of the event, finishing in 131 minutes (10th place overall). The other two women to vanquish the Goat were Vivian Lee, and Terry Farrah. Other notable Goat performances included Steve Hass, the oldest Goat finisher at age 55, Otti Bisang, who ends his stay in BAOCland with a great finish (and now heads back to Switzerland), and Steve Gregg, who finished fourth and maintained his lead in Golden Goat lifetime points.
On the Kid, Anders Nilsson had the fastest time of 96 minutes, but apparently not the stomach for the whole Goat. Marie-Josee Payare was the fastest woman, with a time of 112 minutes. Malcolm Wyatt-Maier was easily the youngest finisher, at age 14, while "Oldest Goat" award (or perhaps that should be "Oldest Kid" award) goes to Oleg Shakhnovsky, aged 65. Gerry Goss won the prize for "least worried about his finish time", deciding to visit the conveniently positioned toilets just before finishing. Apparently the detour took him 49 seconds. Finally (and it was finally), Mel and Grant Glouser did a great job of maximizing the time on the course, coming in just 90 seconds before the course closed. That's how to get value for money! Congratulations to all who vanquished the Goat, and I trust for those who the Goat was just a little too feisty also had a good time.

In addition to the Goat, standard white and yellow courses were offered. Judging by the finish times, pretty much everyone was inspired! On the white course, Doug Adler and Lena Svensson screamed round the course in just over 20 minutes, closely followed by Scott Spears. Doug went on to have the fastest time of the day on the yellow course too.
As is always the case, the Golden Goat couldn't have pulled it off without the help from his (or her?) many loyal subjects who volunteered to help:
