Thank you all for coming out and making the Golden Gate Park meet a pleasant affair. Everyone was very gracious on Sunday. Leif did a great job setting the courses, didn't he? Leif and I now know first hand the amount of effort that goes into planning and running an event. Of course, we couldn't have done it without the help and guidance of many others. Those that offered sage advice include Evan Custer, Mike Springer, Gary Kraght and Scott Aster. Mike Springer e- vetted the courses, and offered very helpful suggestions to Leif in finalizing the courses. Thank you also to Rosemary Johnson for coordinating and obtaining the permits from the park, and to Bob Cooley who made some last minute map corrections and produced the pre- marked maps.
During the day of the event, I was also grateful for all the help I received. Ev and Jean Beuerman, as always, kept things clicking along with registration. Scott Aster and Gary Kraght provided beginner's clinics. Rosemary Johnson helped out at the Starts. Andrea Shepherd and her family helped Leif and I pick up controls. I am somehow related to the rest of the volunteer crew (Johannes, Jean, Julie, Laura, Nicholas and Alexander van Hoff, Nik Weber, Lauren Wemmer and Kristen Weber), so thank you for putting up with me. And thank you for pre-running, setting up and taking down the staging area, going shopping, manning the Start and Finish areas, recording results, and picking up controls.
Drum roll please... The fastest official orienteers on white were Wendy and Manabu Tokunaga finishing the 2.2 km course in just under 37 minutes. Less than one minute behind were Danielle Barzoloski and then the Herbertson family. Vasya Volkov ran the 3.75-km yellow course in a winning time of 43 minutes and 34 seconds. The second place team was anchored by 6-year-old Aaron Doman in a very impressive time of 44:50. The Doman threesome went back out and ran the white course in about 24 minutes. Watch out James and Wyatt.
The Minariks dominated the field on the Orange course. George finished first with a winning time of 38 minutes and 19 seconds - even with the creatively placed #8 control. Leslie had the fastest time for female competitors, followed closely by Angelica Riley. Wyatt Riley finished first in the Long Orange course. The 9.5-km course was very fast due to the extensive trail network in Golden Gate Park, and Wyatt finished in 58 minutes and 18 seconds. Second and third places went to Vadimas Masalkovas and Ben Wahlstrand, respectively. The top female finisher was Penny DeMoss in 76 minutes.
