“What do you mean that there aren’t any parking spaces left? That’s never happened to us here before. Where are all these people coming from?.
That was the scene at this year’s National Orienteering Day event at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont. 311 competitors (at least 129 of them first timers) ran one or more of the four courses offered. Each course provided spectacular views of the bay with the Long Orange course visiting parts of the park unused by courses at prior events.
Veteran (if you can call someone that young a veteran) Kelsey Wyatt-Mair won the white course with a time of 23:18. Tim Wooten (a colleague of Wyatt’s) was the quickest first-timer (3rd place overall) with a time of 27:53. A compass provided by Brunton is on its way to Tim. Brunton was a sponsor of this year.s National Orienteering Day events around the country.
First timer BJ Hamel won the Yellow course with a time of 29:26, more than 5 minutes ahead of the second place finisher. BJ then went on to have the quickest time on the Orange course (as a 2nd course) as well. A copy of Terrain Navigator software from MapTech is on its way to BJ. MapTech was also a sponsor of NOD 2002 around the country.
Werner Haag placed first (as a 1st course) on Orange with a time of 50:45, more than 5 minutes ahead of the second place finisher.
Vladimir Gusiatnikov clocked an amazing 58:44 (close to 10km) on the Long Orange course to take first place and beat out Wyatt Riley by just over a minute.
There is something about Coyote Hills that seems to encourage competitors to loose their punch cards. Like last year, a surprising number of people returned empty handed.
An event like this could not go on without the help and support of a lot of people. As usual, Rosemary Johnson helped with the permit and Bob Cooley printed the maps. Abby Wolfe and Nick Corsano helped with beginner clinics. Chuck Spalding served as a pre-runner. Ev & Jean Beuerman and Ester Heller ran registration. Carol Lewis, Jack Meyers, and Nancy Lindeman started people on their courses. John Pagendarm, Joan Roos, and Cheryl Madson tracked finishers while Sharon Evans, Marsha Jacobs and Chuck Spalding calculated results. Dean French, Vlad Gusiatnikov and Penny and Harold DeMoss retrieved controls afterwards. Special thanks go to two people. Nancy Lindeman apparently pulled some strings to get the Bay Area Backroads show to re-air the orienteering show a week or two before the event. (That’s where they all came from!) Kelly Wells helped set out controls with me on Saturday and made several trips setting out controls and water on Sunday. It’s the mark of a true volunteer when you spend all weekend helping and then don’t get to run a course. I’m sure I missed one or two others. I thank you as well.
Here are the preliminary results for all of the NOD courses run at Coyote Hills on May 5. Please let me know of any spelling errors, typos, etc.
For your information, there were 311 total participants comprising 177 entries. Of the 311, 129 were first-time orienteers.
