We had 315 participants at China Camp on a delightful clear April Sunday. The gorgeous weather certainly helped, along with our web site and our indefatiguable North Bay publicity maven Judy Koehler. There were 52 white participants, 105 yellow, 85 orange, and 73 advanced. There were also thousands of wildflowers, and one turkey (wild, not human) who stayed in the finish area for over three hours. Below are the complete results.
All courses were difficult. In fact, the white course was completely redesigned three days before the event to make it less imposing. Despite the long times and DNF's, though, participants seemed to really enjoy the orienteering. We gained a number of new club members, and first-timers vowing to come back. China Camp's ruggedness always challenges both course setters and participants. We were fortunate to have a guest course-setter from Hungary, Istvan Havasi, who imparted a European touch to the courses.
An event with a large turnout can easily fall to pieces without a cadre of willing volunteers. I am amazed at how many people approached me, both before and during the event, offering to help wherever needed. Other people did tasks without even being asked. Thank you to everyone! The China Camp Volunteer Honor Roll includes Istvan Havasi, Aniko Hager, Kevin Schoenfeld, Bob Cooley, Evan Custer, Bill Papendick, George & Leslie Minarik, Tom & Sandy Guldman, Reggie Dugard & Jasper Wu, George & Pat Aster, Scott Aster, Judy Koehler, Adrian Martin, Johanna Merriss, David Meredith, Idell Weydemeyer, Ev & Jean Beuerman, Rosemary Johnson, Doug Masiel, Leif Kirschenbaum, Jeff Lanam, Joan Roos, Andrejus & Vadimas Masalkovas, Syd Reader, Slava Akinin, Dean French, and others such as the gentleman who manned the finish line while waiting for his son to complete his first Orange.
Best performances were: Aniko Hager on White (who also had the fastest time on Yellow as a second course), the team of Peter Grant and Marc Gelinas on Yellow, Leena Ilmarinen on Orange, Ben Wahlstrand on Brown, Vladimir Gusiatnikov on Green, Matthias Kohler on Red, and Slava Akinin on Blue. Advanced course women bests were: Leslie Minarik (Brown), Angelica Riley (Green), and Penny DeMoss (Blue).
