Stanford

by Syd Reader, meet director
It was a bit soggy at this year's Stanford event and social, but there were still plenty of adventurous people who came out to try a course or two. Almost 100 brave souls faced the rain and mud and darkness. The Stanford Orienteering Club has been happy to bring you all these difficulties. Below are the complete results.
On the White course, the Malte/Carina/Willie team finished in 36:14, beating the next place team by almost 6 minutes. On Yellow, Gary Kraght finished over 10 minutes ahead of the Bond/Roberts/Collaco team, in 29:46. Tony Pinkham completed the Orange course in 39:06, with Nick Corsano not far behind. Marsha Jacobs was the first female finisher, in 52:35, coming in less than a minute ahead of Louise Madrid.
Despite the fact that I forgot to place control 14, everyone enjoyed the daytime Score-O. Doug Stein gathered 22 of 25 controls in just under the time limit, despite dropping his clue sheet/punch card along the way.
Once again, the Night-O was a score format with 50- and 70-minute time limits. On the 50-minute course, Bob Cooley grabbed 17 controls with less than a minute left, edging out Chuck Spalding by one point. And in the 70-minute category, four people found 22 of the 25 controls. Dan Greene started late, but finished with plenty of time left, in 62:47. He was followed by Tony Pinkham and then Eric Rosenzweig, who finished near the time limit. Rex Winterbottom finished just over the time limit, due to his having to transfer a number of control codes from his arm to his clue sheet.
At the potluck social following the event, BAOC presented the 2001 Distinguished Service Award to Gavin Wyatt-Mair, for founding and building the annual Scout-O event into one of the premier orienteering events for regional youth.
I'd like to thank all the people who helped out on Saturday. I may have missed some of you while I was running around, but here are the ones that I know of:
- Bob Cooley once again printed all the maps on short notice.
- Scott Aster took care of registration for the entire day.
- Chuck Spalding and Marsha Jacobs gave beginners' clinics.
- Nick Corsano and Chuck Spalding ran the starts all through the day.
- We had three clinics in the afternoon. I know Jeff Lanam's E-punch Operations clinic was well attended. Thanks also to Abby Wolfe for her Intermediate Skills clinic, and to Scott Aster for his Meet Directing clinic.
- Trevor Pering checked the Night-O controls for properly attached crayons.
- Meg Gerstner and Louise Madrid sat in the scattered showers to run the finishes.
- Alan Glendinning and Marsha Jacobs worked on the results.
- Chuck Spalding and Alan Glendinning helped on control pickup.
- And thanks to everyone for a great potluck and for helping to clean up afterwards. A special thanks to Bill Straka, who made a run to KFC for chicken (and plates and sporks) when it became clear we didn't have enough "real" food (it was nearly all desserts!).
