China Camp

by David Meredith and Idell Weydemeyer, meet directors
China Camp must be one of BAOC's most popular venues, especially for casual orienteers. 313 competitors showed up for a sunny, pleasant November event, with most running the White and Yellow courses. Below are the complete results. Also be sure to check out the e-punch splits for the advanced courses.
Course Participants Winning Time Median time White 97 23:00 (Haag) 72:00 Yellow 100 22:05 (Haag) 64:00 Orange 60 48:37 (Haag) 120:00 Brown 13 41:36 (Haag) 88:55 Green 22 57:57 (Haarma) 95:00 Red 23 68:04 (Reader) 111:02Congratulations to Werner Haag for winning all four events he entered. It has been at least ten years since anyone has had such a successful multi-course day.
Our thanks to all those who helped out. George Minarik set the three advanced courses, and Bob Cooley produced the maps. Judy Koehler publicized the event almost too well. Joan Roos and Bill Papendick vetted courses. Bill Papendick and Steve Gregg set controls. Joan Roos and Martin Taylor helped set up. Judy Koehler, Martin Taylor, Vic Revenko, and Pat and George Aster registered participants. Scott Aster gave clinics. Joan Roos, Larry Heller and Alan Jones managed starts. Syd Reader helped with finishes. Evan Custer, Robert Lewis and Jeff Lanam ran the download station for e-punching, and Robert Lewis also put in long hours checking and recording finishes for the WYO courses. Finally, Scott Aster, Bill Papendick and Chris Taylor picked up controls. Many others pitched in during the meet. We appreciate everyone's efforts, your patience when lines got long, your cooperation with parking regulations, and your fortitude when water ran out.
We enjoyed directing this event, setting the courses and greeting the competitors. We are thankful to those who volunteered. Many volunteers put in extra time, because we were short-handed. Nevertheless, we think we came too close to having an insufficiently staffed event. We needed one or two more people at registration, three more for starts, two for finishes, and at least one more to help check finishes. We did about 1/3 of the starts and 2/3 of the finishes ourselves while trying to keep track of the meet overall, and in the resulting confusion three competitors did not have their times recorded. Our apologies to those we missed.
Orienteering works when participants help. If you come to meets, please spend an hour before or after your run working at registration, starts or finishes. Contact the meet directors ahead of time to find out where you are most needed or volunteer when you arrive. Directors will accommodate your schedule. We cannot have meets without your help.
