At our annual Big Basin Redwoods event, beginner orienteers dominated the registration area throughout the day. A total of 173 groups registered. We thought we had plenty of maps printed up (60 White, 70 Yellow), but we ran out for both White and Yellow. Many thanks to the early finishers who donated their maps to be recycled so everyone could run. Many thanks as well to the participants who had to wait for their patience. Many beginners commented that they intended to return for future events.

The White course was won by a wide margin by a group that included Cindy Chang, John Tseng, Wendy Karg, Charles Wang and Julian Leong. Yellow was won by Jean-Luc Brouillet, with Sharon and Dan Evans coming in less than a minute later in second place, and Jussi and Roope Heinila coming in less than a minute after that for third. Johanna Merriss won the Orange course, with C. T. List finishing in second and Hardev Grenwal finishing third.
The advanced courses were long and tough as anticipated. Congratulations to to everyone who finished successfully, and also to those who were prepared to 'give it a go' despite all the navigational and physical difficulties involved in advanced orienteering at Big Basin.
On the Blue course, Wyatt Riley showed his class with an astonishing sprint finish to overtake Syd Reader on the run-in. Syd, who was ahead by 12 seconds at the last control, was overtaken in the last 100m by Wyatt, who won by a mere 2 seconds! Thorsten Graeve was third, just over 5 minutes back. On Red, Perttu Illmarine won by a convincing margine of nearly 15 minutes over Kent Ohlund. Kent was another 20 minutes ahead of third-place finisher Matthias Kohler.
On the Green and Brown courses, it appeared that many people struggled to overcome the complexities of the early part of the course, resulting in a higher-than-average number of DNFs. However, many did meet the challenge: Evan Custer, Chuck Spalding, and Steve Jankowski finished in that order on the Green course, whilst on the Brown, Dennis Wilfogel finished first, over Jacq Gwenhael and Stew Hintz.
Many volunteers helped make this event happen. Russell Green set the advanced courses and Dean French set the beginning courses. Debra and Alan LaVergne organized the shuttles for the advanced courses. Shuttle drivers included David Takacs, Mark Rice, Nancy Lindeman, and Olivia Graeve. Trinka Gillis, Jill Custer, and a kind gentleman (whose name I did not get) helped with starts. Van Boughner and Galena Shakhnovsky handled finishes. Penny and Harold DeMoss did control pickup. Esther Heller, Roberta Pitsenbarger, Diane Hall, Katie Barton (Troop 779), Kristen Pitsenbarger (Troop 242), Robert Lewis, and Jeff Lanam compiled the results. Robert Lewis programmed the e-punch boxes. Bob Cooley printed the maps. Chuck Spalding upgraded the start and finish banners. Rosemary Johnson provided the insurance. Ev and Jean Beuerman as well as Esther Heller handled the registration. Wyatt Riley tracked down the return of a missing contestant. I apologize to anyone who helped that I have not mentioned. As you can see, the various duties to be done to put an event are many. Let's give a big round of applause to these caring people!
