Presidio
San Francisco
Sept. 2, 2001
by Vic Revenko, meet director
A great turnout on a beautiful Labor Day weekend! A whopping 241 participants attended the Presidio O' meet - many for the first time. Several groups decided to picnic after their event, including a group of 11-year-old girls celebrating a birthday. Below are the complete results.
Mike Springer was the course setter and decided to use pie plates as controls to allow more flexibility in locating them in an area as accessible as the Presidio. They worked out well except for a few misplaced controls on Long Orange (13 and 15). Thanks to Steve Gregg, they were placed correctly. Steve as well as Penny DeMoss (and apparently some others) also helped by fixing wind-blown controls, which slowed their times. Your fellow orienteers thank you for this unselfish effort. One other shortcoming of the pie-plate control method (ppcm) was the solid red color on one side of the control that waved in the breeze. This was a problem for some who are color-blind. Notwithstanding these problems, the feedback from the participants was that it was a fun event.
The Presidio is constantly changing since it must be a self-sustaining park. This means that the map frequently needs updating. Long Orange orienteers found needed changes in the west part of the course area. Hopefully these can be made in time for next year's event.
The Presidio attracted people from around the Bay Area and beyond. Sometimes winning is better with more than one head. This was the case for the White course winner (the Hobsons at 39:04) as well as the next five runners-up (the Longinottis, the Snoopers, the Road Runners, the Jaguars, the Chins). The Long White winner (57:44) was Blanka Dobrkovska, newly arrived from the Czech Republic. Gary Kraght was the Yellow course winner (24:22). He said that he broke some personal best efforts. George Minarik, the BAOC treasurer, won the Orange course with a time of 52:33. Long Orange was long - it was designed to go around the periphery of the Presidio. Boris Granovsky had the fastest time (58:47). Congratulations to all participants!
Thanks for the Help!
This event depends on lots of help from fellow orienteers. Thanks to Mike Springer for his excellent and new course setting. The Presidio is limiting, since it is a heavily used urban park, but Mike added some new touches. Bob Cooley made the event easier with great preprinted maps. Thanks also to Rosemary Johnson for getting the permit. The Presidio draws lots of new people to orienteering. Gary Kraght and Tony Pinkham did a great job of teaching new orienteers at the beginners' clinics. This makes a big difference to making the day fun for novices.
Ev and Jean Beuerman stayed awake long enough after returning from Europe the day before to manage the registration process. My great thanks for their invaluable service not only at this but at many BAOC events.
Energetic orienteers were well Started by Galina and Oleg Shakhnovsky and Ed Ow. Moving 241 participants out into the courses was a smooth process. Participants were Finished off by Penny and Harold DeMoss, Scott Aster, and Leif Kirschenbaum.
The results were tallied by Marsha Jacobs, Robert Lewis, and Chuck Spalding (who also waited for the last finisher). Chuck also did later homework to compile all the results and publish them.
Thanks to all who made this event seamless. It was a lot of fun and the feedback - especially from new orienteers - was very positive.
