Bayfront Park greeted 152 orienteers - many first-timers and the most ever for a meet at this venue - with a variety of course offerings, including BAOC's first Trail Orienteering courses of the year. Below are the complete results.
Trail-O is a relatively new version of the sport, designed to challenge a participant's map reading skill, not physical speed or stamina. It provides people with limited mobility - whether from disability, age or injury - the chance to compete on equal terms with those who are more able-bodied. And it can pose a real test for any orienteer's skills.
Club veteran Judy Koehler finished first on the Beginner Trail-O, successfully identifying all seven controls. Vicki Woolworth and daughters Joanne and Robin finished second. Newcomers Anna Brunzell and Eric Ramberg were the only competitors to score a perfect 10 on the Intermediate Trail-O. The Intermediate course included a timed control, designed to act as a tie-breaker, but that didn't work out as Ms. Brunzell was the only person who identified it correctly! The team of Rachel Freund and Justine Simkins, with 9 correct, were the top Juniors on the course, and were tied for second overall with a distinguished trio of club regulars: Steve Gregg, Marsha Jacobs, and Robert Lewis.
There were also three standard courses: White, Yellow and "Trailless," which was navigationally equivalent to a Yellow course, but was made longer by criss-crossing the barren center of the park in a Figure 8 pattern, and made somewhat harder by deleting all trails from the map.
Nancy Winterbottom finished first on White, followed by Tyler and Cliff Williams. Ryan Pon, in third place, was the first solo Junior. On Yellow, Derek Maclean, who normally runs Red, blazed through the course in just over half the time of second place finisher Frank Markowitz. Rachel Care was the top Junior, and an impressive fifth overall. There was real speed on display on the Trailless course, as Doug Stein sprinted to a close victory over Wyatt Riley.
The many volunteers who helped make the event go smoothly earn my heartfelt gratitude. Thanks go first to Steve Beuerman, who assisted in all aspects of the Trail-O from course design to control hanging to working the start all day and the finish after that; then to the rest of the Trail-O crew: Esther Heller, Liz Butterfield, Dwight Freund, Rachel Freund, and Justine Simkins; the team that ran things on the White/Yellow/Trailless side: Chuck Spalding, Kevin Schoenfeld, Debbie Wojtowicz, Meg Gerstner, and Dan Greene; registration: Jean and Ev Beuerman; beginners' clinics: David Meredith and Dennis Wildfogel; control pickup: Alan Glendinning and Meg Gerstner, and Rory Maclean, who mobilized Mom Stephanie, Dad Derek, and Aunt Kirsty Lee to aid in the effort. Thanks finally to Mike Poulsen, who pioneered the trailless concept at Bayfront in a training session two years ago.
