Dimond Park

Oakland
Feb. 11, 2001

by Dan Stoll-Hadayia, meet director

What a difference a week makes! Just seven days after record high temperatures were in place for the Royal Gorge Ski-O, a much grimmer weather outlook greeted the Dimond Park Street-O on Sunday, February 11. But despite the steady soakings that occurred both the day prior and the day following the event, a similarly forecast washout held off during the event - a fortunate thing when answers must be written down on paper! Though a brief, sudden hailstorm sent everyone scurrying for cover for a few minutes, several breaks of sunshine through the otherwise overcast skies brightened the spirits of the 46 participants. Below are the complete results.

The event was a score-O, with several unusual twists. The 22 controls were scattered across the map of Piedmont and the adjacent hills of Oakland, with point values from 2 to 6 assigned without the usual correlation to the control's difficulty. Several geographically themed trivia questions and a crossword puzzle were together worth 10 points, on top of the 90 that could be gained through visiting controls. Participants were allowed to go by foot or by bicycle at their own discretion, as noted in the results below. Leftover orienteering maps from the event director's trip to Scandinavia last summer were awarded as prizes to the top finishers in both the 60-minute and 120-minute categories.

While two long-time BAOC stalwarts, Wyatt Riley and Bruce Wolfe, took top honors in the 120-minute and 60-minute categories, many newcomers did very well also! Hopefully we'll see them all at many future BAOC events.
