Sierra 2000 O-Fest

Team Sierra

by Evan Custer, festival director

The Sierra 2000 O-Fest was very successful, in large part due to the enormous amount of work done by volunteers. It certainly would not have been possible to pull off this 9-day event were it not for the help of so many club members.

I would like to acknowledge several very important people. Most of all, this event would not have occurred if it were not for the tireless work of Bob Cooley. He spearheaded the mapping program of both Northstar and Burton Creek. In addition, he vetted all of the courses at the two Spooner events and the three A meets held at Northstar and Burton Creek. He designed the white and yellow courses of the second day of the Pacific Region Championships. He helped place the controls and water at Northstar and Burton Creek. In addition, he printed up all of the maps (approximately 3000 of them) and the clue sheets. He provided the printers and power supply for the electronic punching equipment. Basically, he worked nonstop on this event for months, and in the last few weeks, barely got time to get any sleep. Thanks, Bob. You did a heroic effort.

I also want to thank the course designers. Kent Ohlund designed the first day of the Pacific Region Championships, and Joe Scarborough designed the second day intermediate and advanced courses. George Kirkov designed the courses at Northstar. In addition, George did all of the mapping and cartography of these two venues, helped place the controls, water, and EP units at the Spooner, Northstar, and Burton Creek events. He also did vetting of the Spooner and Burton Creek events. Steve Gregg designed, mapped and directed the Mountain Bike-O, and Karen Dennis and David Irving organized, mapped, and designed the very successful Trail-O event and workshops.

George Minarik did a fantastic job of organizing the convention. He lined up the workshop speakers and skill session leaders, worked closely with the Northstar group sales person for arrangements at Northstar, designed and set the practice sessions at Northstar and the 4th Dimension event. Leslie Minarik also deserves a lot of appreciation for designing and organizing the Vampire-O, and helping in multiple other ways.

Steve Beuerman did a fantastic job as registrar and housing coordinator. He had to design and maintain a complex database for entries into 7 different events, handle T-shirt, dinner, lift ticket, and SportIdent electronic punch card sales and rentals. He also handled all of the Northstar housing accommodations.

Ev and Jean Beuerman did their usual fabulous job of handling registration for the Spooner Warm-up B meet and Relay, the Mountain Bike-O, the Trail-O, and the recreational events at the A-meets.

I want to thank Dennis Wildfogel for being in charge of recruiting the crew chiefs. This was an enormous help, and his subtle and not-so-subtle techniques produced a great crew chief team. Among the crew chiefs, I want to thank Dan Greene, who did a great job managing two start venues with the complexities of the new SportIdent system and multiple people changing courses. We added a construction crew this year and this turned out to be very helpful. Ron Gross led his team of GCO members in providing this very valuable chore. Also, I especially want to thank Kelly Wells for organizing the control pick-up team. This is the job that every event director likes to see filled, and Kelly and his team did a fabulous job.

Abby Wolfe did a tremendous job of posting information on the web about the event. There was an enormous amount of information that was on the web page, and I think most participants found out what was happening through that medium. Also, Robert Lewis did a marvelous job of preparing the very professional program.

Finally, I want to thank my wife, Jill Custer, who tolerates my obsession with good humor and tremendous support. This event took a lot of time, and most of it came out of her share.

Here is the listing of people who helped at the event. I am sure I must have missed some people, and for that I apologize.
