On Sunday, September 24, more than 200 orienteers took on the challenging terrain of Big Basin State Park. Below are the complete results. Also be sure to check out the e-punch splits for the advanced courses (Brown through Blue).
The number of Orange orienteers particularly surprised us; we ran out of Orange maps, and had to recirculate maps to the remote start. The more than 60 Orange orienteers may have been drawn by the promise of an intermediate clinic, or the promise of an appropriately difficult Orange course. Whatever the reason, their turnout was welcome, and I'm sure the experience of orienteering in Big Basin will carry them a significant step closer to doing advanced courses in the future.
Congratulations to all orienteers who tried the courses at Big Basin; as I'm sure you discovered, Big Basin has a rare combination of low visibility, intricate detail, and unusual mapping conventions (not to mention some mapping inaccuracies) that make the orienteering very challenging.
The WinSplits results showed a curious phenomenon on Blue: Almost everbody who finished the course had a first leg that was flagged as "time lost" (that is, the program determined that the orienteer had a poor result on that leg), while almost everyone who had a good first leg didn't finish the course. I don't know exactly what this shows. It could indicate:
Events like this depend on lots of volunteers. I'd like to thank Nick Corsano for setting the advanced courses. By a combination of map editing and rerouting he was able to avoid the worst problems of the Big Basin map and to create challenging courses with accurate control placement. I'd also like to thank Mark Rice for setting the beginning and intermediate courses; he did particularly well at one of the more difficult course setting tasks: getting the level of difficulty correct for the Orange course.
In addition, I'd like to thank Bob Cooley for printing the maps, the Scarboroughs for pre-running, Jean and Ev Beuerman and Esther Heller for registration, Neal Barlow for beginner's clinics, Abby Wolfe for intermediate clinics, Robert Lewis for organizing the e-punch results, Matthias Kohler for helping with the starts, and Alan Glendinning and Meg Gerstner for helping with the beginning course finishes and results. Finally, at the end of the day it was great to have a full crew to pick up controls: Gary Carpenter, Harold and Penny DeMoss, David Dreyfuss, Parag Gupta, Theo Verhoeven, and Kelly Wells.
