Indian Valley

May 6, 2000

by Harold DeMoss, meet director, and Penny DeMoss, course setter

The National Orienteering Day celebration at Indian Valley was a success with about 225 participants. The weather was ideal, and it didn't start raining until everyone had left for home (except for the people who volunteered to pick up controls). This was the first scheduled club "B" meet to use the SportIdent e-punch system in the U.S., and it worked perfectly. The complete results are below.

Having courses with many route choices and also having e-punch splits for all advanced (Brown and above) competitors made for some interesting post-race banter. James Scarborough was 1st on the Blue course, in spite of taking the "high road" on the long leg. I think everyone agreed afterword that going up to the road was not the optimal route, although James still beat 2nd placer Dan Stoll-Hadayia by 7 minutes. Syd Reader was 3rd, 2+ minutes behind Dan.

Bruce Wolfe, stepping down from his usual Blue, ran away from the field on Red in 1:13:55. Kent Ohlund was 2nd, and Derek Maclean was 3rd. Hannu Haarma was 1st on Green in 1:15:28. Chris Taylor was 2nd, and James Wilson was 3rd. Angelica Riley was 4th and 1st woman. Alan Glendinning won the Brown course by 11 minutes over Leif Kirchenbaum, with Dennis Wildfogel (re- covering from knee surgery) in 3rd place. Stephanie Maclean was 4th, and 1st woman.

On the Orange course, Alan Razee was 1st, Scott Hen- derson was 2nd, and Bruno Plamondon was 3rd. Cathy Bolger/Ken Renworth (pair) was 4th, and Melissa Criqui was 5th. On the Yellow course, Gary Kraght (recovering from injury) was 1st, and Sandra Tresan was 2nd. On the White course, Christopher Arras was 1st, Malcom Wyatt-Mair was 2nd, Lamar Turner was 3rd, and Rachel Care was 4th.

The big excitement occurred the day before the event, when Penny almost stepped on a rattlesnake on a direct line between the next to last control on Orange and the last control. So we decided it would be prudent to make that area out of bounds since snakes are territorial. There were no reports of snake sightings.

Volunteer thank-yous

Penny and I want to give credit to all the club volunteers who gave of their time and effort to make this National Orienteering Day event a success. Special thanks to Bill Papendick for being a good sport about having to come back from the first control when he discovered Penny accidently gave him the wrong map. And to Judy Koehler, who showed up after a fairly serious car accident to help out, even though she was not up to going out on a course. She was terrific at greeting the many newcomers and helping them sort through the "first time" jitters.
