This year's Egg-O featured an expanded map of Shoreline Park and a whole new area for our children's and beginners' courses. Much of the new area was closed to orienteering for the owl nesting season, but we still had plenty of land for our beginner and children's courses. In the months after October, we should be able to use the low rolling hills for even more interesting beginner courses.
We set up two Start-O courses with a twist - instead of punching at each control, the children had to collect a numbered egg from each control location and return it for a treat. It was a lot of fun watching children carefully (or not so carefully) carry the plastic eggs to the finish for their treat. Our administrator of the Start-O finish line had the added task of keeping his determined infant son from taste testing all the treats - no eggs, no treats! Below are the complete results.
The White course followed various linear features, mostly fences, around the open area that we could use. Although it was open, it was also expansive enough that people usually couldn't see the entire course because the ground had a slight rise that made such views impossible.
For those with longer legs, we had a 4.2 km Yellow course that used various trails far out into the wetlands with some route selections. That course was just right for those who wanted a long walk or medium run.
For those who wanted a little more challenge, we had an 8.1 km Score-O course that stretched over the entire map.
On all our courses, we had 83 entries with about 145 people. That's a record for the Egg-O, which has had steadily growing popularity ever since its beginning in 1997.
Fortunately, we also had a record number of volunteers to help with the record crowd. Matthias Kohler helped set the controls, manage starts, and pickup controls. Ev&Jean and Steve Beuerman managed registration. Thorsten Graeve, the original mapper of the park, gave beginner clinics and helped with the Start-O. Derek Maclean managed the Start-O. Chuck Spalding helped with beginner's clinics and various other functions. Jeff Lanam managed the finishes. Neal Barlow managed results and helped pickup controls.
