On a lovely spring day, 196 participants accounted for 98 entries on the four courses designed by Dwight Freund. Although the beginner courses were more challenging than usual, we had virtually no complaints and almost everybody finished. Furthermore, the meet directors weren't deluged with dozens of newcomers, after finishing their course well within an hour, saying "What do we do next?" Below are the complete results.
The White course required careful navigation through the maze of buildings in the central campus. However, everyone completed the course successfully, with Nicholas Mang and Nina Lin finishing first in a speedy 20:34.
The Yellow course was longer than usual, and took participants to open fields both N and S of the "urban sprawl." That gave people a chance to experience some "normal" orienteering, as well as enjoy some whimsical control features Dwight found on the campus. The course was won by Susan Petrick with a swift 50:45.
The Orange course combined fine orienteering among the buildings, open- field navigation, and a really long (1 km) leg. Five people finished under the magical 10 min/km pace, led by Angelica Riley at 36:01. In addition, the team of Michael Brill and John Gaylord blazed through the course in 32:18, with the benefit of having been to 6 of the 10 controls while running the Long Orange course.
The Long Orange course gave the more-experienced orienteers a chance to show their speed, with two thirds of the entries running faster than 10 min/km. Syd Reader won with an impressive 40:45 (claiming that his "home field advantage" didn't help). Apologies are offered for not having streamers on the barbed "trip wire" near the lake.
Another gold star goes to Bob Cooley for field checking and map corrections, and for printing all the maps (including many during the event). The ever-present registration team of Ev and Jean Beuerman were assisted by Esther Heller, none of whom took time to run a course. Beginners clinics were held by Bill Straka, Marsha Jacobs, Nancy Lindeman, Neal Barlow, Nick Corsano and Steve Gregg, which surely contributed to the high level of success on White and Yellow. Starts were managed by Galena Shakhnovsky, Meg Gerstner and Mike Fleishman. Results were processed by Meg, Alan Glendinning and Greg Fleishman. Last but not least, Mike Fleishman and Oleg Shakhnovsky picked up the controls. Thanks to all those folks, and to anyone that I've inadvertently overlooked.
In closing, I thank Mike Fleishman for volunteering to be the official meet director. His direction was invaluable, as was his calm handling of the hectic moments of the event.
