A weekend of sun brought many veteran orienteers out of their winter hibernation to compete on an expanded Coyote Hills map. It also attracked quite a few first-timers. Fifty-mile-per-hour wind gusts did all but blow some participants off the courses. No one got lost (or blown away!) and there were very few DNFs. Below are the complete results, and be sure to check out the photos, taken by Angelica Riley.
Seventy-plus girl scouts and leaders from Almaden arrived on a mystery bus ride to learn all about orienteering and visit the Nature Center at Coyote Hills. After sitting through beginners' clinics presented by Scott Aster, Gary Kraght, Nick Corsano, and Jeff Lanam, the girls and their leaders broke into small groups and did White courses. They met back in the registration area, had lunch, picked up new maps and did Yellow courses. I bet they slept well on their bus ride back.
On White, Gary Martinez won with a time of 10:43, followed by Josh Wells and Lindsay Lowe at 15:13. F10 national champion Rachel Care did her first-ever solo course (without an adult shadow), and proved that she could do just fine even without an adult trailing behind, finishing 3rd of 31, in 19 minutes, an excellent 10 minutes per kilometer.
On Yellow, 1st place went to Steve Jankowski at 19:59, 2nd place to Susan Petrick at 23:45 and 3rd place to Bruce Washburn at 25:28. Seventeen participants that competed on White also competed on Yellow.
On Orange, Eric Rosenweig burned up the course with a time of 50:20 followed by Alan Glendinning at 55:18. The team of Darin van Hoff and Craig Spencer finished at 61:41 in third. Marching around the steep and windy course, Nancy Lindemann finished solidly, ahead of 27 people in 13 groups.
Several recent events have shown that Dan Stoll-Hadayia is rapidly becoming a fast and consistent orienteer, a cut above most of BAOC's USA-leading M21 (and more) crowd, now challenging James Scarborough for the spot of fastest orienteer in the club. His 56-minute run on the Coyote Hills Long Orange placed him nearly 7 minutes ahead of the pack at his heels, with 11 more people in the next 7 minutes. Leading the pack was Doug Stein, followed just 2 seconds later by M35 Neal Barlow. M40 Matthias Kohler showed he is in excellent shape (supposedly after just a few days of cross-country skiing), coming in 4th, less than a minute from 2nd. Gary Carpenter (M50) showed he's still cruising, within 7 minutes of Doug making him a member of the "fast pack" at Coyote Hills. Penny Demoss (F50) is clearly back in strong form, clocking 75 minutes for the 8.3 km, 325m climb course.
(Just for fun, Long Orange winner Dan Stoll-Hadayia, and Steve Gregg, member of the top Long Orange pack, ran the Yellow course unofficially (after finishing the Long Orange) clocking a 13:05 and 14:53, respectively for 2.1 km and 125m climb.)
Thanks go out to all the volunteers that made this event director's first event such a success. Pre-registration (of the girl scouts) was handled by Ev & Jean Beuerman. On-site registration was handled by Aimee Grimes and Vivian Lee. Bob Cooley printed the maps. Scott Aster, Nick Corsano, Gary Kraght and Jeff Lanam did the beginners' clinics (including the 70+ girl scouts and leaders.) Harold and Penny DeMoss and Dean French handled the Starts. Carol Lewis and Bilal Kheir manned the finishes. Meg Gerstner, Alan Glendinning, and Christina Philips calculated and posted the results. Mark Blair, Chuck Spalding, Parag Gupta and Kelly and Julie Wells picked up controls after the event.
Special thanks go to Wyatt and Angelica Riley for expanding the mapped area, setting the courses, vetting the courses, hanging the bags, picking up equipment before the event, taking pictures, etc., etc., etc. I am convinced that Wyatt did more work than the event director, and Wyatt is convinced of the opposite. Doing tag-team events makes it easier on everyone.
