At least two records were broken at the Emerald Hills meet: We had almost 100 participants, and the weather - for a switch - was GORGEOUS! The courses, set by Dox Doxiadis and Sarah Edwards, provided fun and challenging clues, and the views were spectacular (unlike former misty/foggy/rainy years). From what I gathered and witnessed, everyone seemed to have a good time. Below are the complete results.
General concensus from participants was that they would have liked the time limits to be longer (they were 30/60 minutes short/long). (I bet you wouldn't have felt that way if it were raining. :)) Dox and Sarah graciously took all the input, and are even thinking about doing it again next year.
On the other hand, I chose not to accept wrong answers on control #7 (Score-O). It was tempting to do so (because it was WAY the heck down the mountain), but it was specifically noted on the clue sheet that it was the number of stripes on the EAST side of the pole. And, since this is a "thinking [and reading and paying attention to the clues] sport"...
I also chose not to give control #9 (Score-O) away for the same reason (and also because only one person - out of 9 who attempted - missed it). This was the control that asked how many terraces were in front of the house. The answer: 3 terraces were made up with stone walls. (I will admit that one of the answers to this clue was misleading, by referring to the Stones. But that was the point - you really had to read the clue(s).)
Even with the disputes, it was a very cheerful crowd. I think Tony Pinkham aided the camaraderie by letting everyone ride his cool recumbent bicycle. If anyone has been thinking about acquiring one, Tony is the man to see. Thanks for sharing your toy, Tony!
Thanks to all of my other wonderful helpers, too, each of whom not only showed up on time, but also were willing to help out longer and in other capacities also! (Like I said, it was a GOOD day!) The ever-faithful Jean and Ev Beuerman showed up first thing to coordinate and handle registration, and lighten up my last-minute stressing :). Neal Barlow masterfully managed the beginners' clinics; Jack Myers and Tony Pinkham skillfully directed the starts for the majority of the meet; Robert Lewis organized the results process, and then deftly (and conveniently) took over the finishes (from me), and wore both hats competently. Sarah and Dox (in addition to course setting) were also a big part of the finishes and results. I am also grateful to Wyatt Riley, who acted as my personal meet director consultant; I bent his ear for many a query, and he responded with ease and patience.
Rosemary Johnson got the permit for Roy Cloud school in ample time, including tips on how I should follow up and who to contact. Thanks to Willie at the RWC School District and the loyal custodian on-call, who returned to the school to unlock one of the bathrooms that my key did not fit. Werner Haag and Dao provided the Start-O controls; Vicki Woolworth supplied the Start-O map; and then my good fairy Nancy Lindeman scrambled early on event day to make corrections to the Start-O map, including racing down the hill to make copies - wow! And to all those volunteers who helped make the meet a success and I inadvertently left out your names - an even bigger thanks to you!
And, last but not least, a hearty thanks to all the participants. Their good spirits and sportsmanship contributed to this rewarding event.
