Here are the mid-year BAOC rankings, plus the methodology for compiling them. Thanks and suggestions both go to Joe Scarborough, our technical director. Yellow and Orange rankings compiled by John Pagendarm.
The scores are based on the USOF ranking system, with modifications to increase the competition for BAOC. Points are awarded by comparing a runner's time with the average of the fastest three on the course. Then a competition factor is applied, which consists of the average ranking points (normalized to a top score of 100) from the previous year of the top three ranked runners who usually run the course.
As in the past, runners stepping down from their USOF course are included in the BAOC rankings. This year the adjustment is modified for Red and Green to place younger (usually) runners who have scored 80 or more points on a previous ranking list to the supplementary list for the affected course. These are the better of those listed separately as B category runners in USOF and international competition and ranking. This rule will not, of course, affect the advanced long list.
The ranking rules call for a minimum of four events to qualify for the list, but a credit day is allowed if needed for course-setting or in the event of voided course. Four of the best five, 5/6, 5/7, 6/8, and 6/9 are averaged for the annual score.
For this interim ranking list, exceptions are made for Brown and below because of the lower participation rates on these courses. There are five more days of B meets, so there's plenty of opportunity to appear on the final 1998 list.
Also, for the first time, C meets will be used for the Orange and Yellow rankings. The assumption is that terrain and map standards necessary for fair and challenging courses at these levels will be met.
This year, an Advanced Long List will appear with the 1998 rankings. This list follows a much less strict system, which will include C meet results and combine all advanced competitors in a single listing. The long list will provide a hypothetical comparison of competition on different courses.
CRE meets are A or de facto B events used to compute the Advanced Rankings. Yellow and Orange Ranking Events (YORE) meets are additional events (C meets) used for Yellow and Orange rankings and the Advanced Long List.

Judging from points scored, the general level of performance is up from 1997, it just up more for some than others. In their balancing act between orienteering and graduate studies, James Scarborough and Lans Taylor have again traded places. Lans was unable to get in four ranking events in the last 12 months relegating him to the supplemental list. James' return to the list was marked by some rusty performances as his long home winning streak was broken by Neeme and Kent at Annadel.
And in second place, Neil Barlow has put aside his triathloning enough to get in some good runs, most impressively with his 91.2 pointer at Sunol. Neeme drops a spot despite a gain of 4 points and being the top club finisher at Annadel. Michi Kamijima adds 10 points to his score his hill shock subsides. Michi chalked up a win at China Camp for 80.8 points. Penny keeps the number nine Blue spot and maintains her perennial number one spot among BAOC women. Newcomers to the list are Brian Moore, Doug Stein, and Peter Graube.

Kent has been concentrating on Blue this year as he returns to form but in their only meeting this year, Tapio scored an impressive 101.6 to 89.8 victory. Werner Haag moves into third off a scorching 104.5 at Annadel. Steve Gregg has moved up to Blue this year but still has enough points from last year for fourth place.

The list can be misleading as to 1998. Looking at the scores so far this year, just for fun, the order of the top three is reversed, George 93.3, Dennis 92.8 and me with 91.9. (Too bad about the Annadel voiding.)
1. Minarik, Sarah 107.3 3 2. Kraght, Gary 98.7 2 3. Krasnova, Elena 90.5 3 4. Corsano, Nick 68.0 3 5. Minarik, Leslie 56.7 4 6. DeMarothy, Maroth 55.7 3 7. Lee, Jascha 54.2 4 8. Young, Michael 28.6 2 16. Johnson, Rosemary 24.6 2The two top spots on Brown are the same as for the 1997 list. Changes for the 1998 list are likely as neither Sarah nor Gary have any Brown runs as yet this year. Hopefully, we will see enough Brown runners get in four races before the end of the year to give us a healthy competitive list.

To be included, a competitor must be an intermediate runner and club member, and have competed in two ranking events in the past 12 months. (Three will be required for the year-end rankings.) Please note that a new procedure has been used. There are a number of events that provide Yellow and Orange runners with "ranking quality" courses, but (unfortunately) do not provide the same for the advanced runners. Therefore, in addition to the Club Ranking Events (CREs) there are now Yellow and Orange Ranking Events (YOREs). This should provide the intermediate runners with more opportunity to "run for points." The current rankings are based on 14 YOREs from July 1997 to June 1998.
