The course setter prefers the high (group 1) routes to the low (group 2) ones, and the split times from the event and the runners' accounts seem to confirm that. The extra ease of trail running on 2 does not seem to compensate for the extra length and climb, compared to group 1. Route 1A is better than any other group 1 route.

However, few except the high-placing runners opted for #1. A lot of runners preferred the trail route (#2), and 2K seemed to be a clear winner over 2L because of the lack of steep climb up to the control. On Brown, a strong runner could gain some advantage an save a lot of length by going virtually straight (route 3), but this route was almost certainly not as fast as 1A. The course setter is not aware of anyone taking route 3.
