Suggestions for Kids’ Events
Assist scout groups w/ their own event. Tony P. helped us do this 2 yrs ago. It was great and got about 150 kids to try orienteering
Compass giveaways, coloring maps, terrain appreciation walks
Games for kids being babysat, short nature hikes
Give more guidance on map reading. Instructions at Start O are not very thorough
Great job, as far as I can tell
Have only participated in 1 event
Have special courses. May be simply have 2 result lists for white and yellow, adults vs. kids. EVERY course for kids MYST have prizes.
I am concerned about safety for kids competing alone (esp. in urban areas). I have complained about this, as I think it's a potentially serious danger.
Injury
Live demos at schools
My son's great on W/Y/O w/ me, but also loves any start o which he can do on his own. Mildly disappointed if there is none or if it closes early. In general we have a great time!
O games and skills workshops at social events
Organized groups activities by age group, or scavenger hunt
Outreach to schools to inform children about O'ing; make events more kid-friendly
Pre-event "training" for kids on simple compass and map reading
Skate O, Bike O
Stair step of activities where kids can get badges for mastering specific skills
Stickers for participating, ribbons
Teen O meetings
What keeps you from attending more events?
Q11
Directions to site sometimes unclear
Don't know anyone else to do it with
Don't live in Bay Area
Don’t live in CA
Events too far away
Health problems
I avoid some sites because of the cattle. Have seen bulls on the loose (mostly Las Trampas, also Shell Ridge, Morgan Terr.)
I live in Colorado
I prefer traditional courses, usually skip Sprint O, score O, etc.
Just can't find time
Like to try new areas
Not enough events
Not enough time
Other interest
Other things to do
Other volunteer efforts
Overseas member
Recent surgery
School commitments
Scouting activities
Sprained ankle
Too many activities
Too many unusual events.
Too much going on
Too tired, sometimes too far
Reasons for Not Volunteering
Been busy w/ other sports on weekends
Don’t know enough
Feel like we're casual members at best. Not hooked enough to want to get more involved. Haven't been to event in 2 years
Goals are to get O skills and participate in physically challenging event. Haven't yet met those goals
Have kids w/ me, they need to be watched
Have my child, and he would get bored
Health problems
Homework
I have helped some but haven't been asked lately
I'd love to if it could be reasonably time-bounded, or if could be done w/ a young lad.
If I were truly in love w/ it and more active I would. It's fun, but not top priority
It's a very occasional sport for us. We have many hobbies, and cannot volunteer for all. Sorry!
Just can't imagine how to fit more volunteer activities into my life, even if wanted to
Just joined in last 6 mos.
My kids and their activities take too much time
My poor English
Need to attend first!
No child care for 4 & 7 year olds
No free time as a single dad
No time to even attend as much as I want
Not yet experienced enough
Other commitments have curtailed my O'ing time.
Poison oak
Starting new career, not enough time
Too new
Usually takes too long to drive
Was glad to assist at one event. Upon arrival, was told I was not needed
Wasn't specifically asked, and am busy most weekends
Would like to map, but have no experience. I have done registration

General Comments
"Cliquish" isn't right word. I just think they have no reason to want or welcome new members
Excellent questionnaire!
For a while I was feeling lots of pressure w/ all the '; marketing plans and more volunteerism needed. I just want to have fun!
Funny -- I set up, run and teach short O courses [for work] but have never participated in a BAOC event.
Generally the club is well run, holds good events. Encouraging a higher level of volunteering is important (but probably difficult)
Good luck w/ the survey. I did run a meet twice and found it is very hard to please the advanced gung ho members. I would like to assist someone running a meet sometime.
Great work! BAOC is well run. 10 out of 10!
Hold B or higher events or practice sessions more often. 1 month between courses is WAY too long to hope to build on previous mistakes/strong points. IMO, the street/campus etc. O courses may be fun, but don't do much to make one a better orienteerer.
How about a downhill Alpine O? Has it ever been done?
I don't go as often as I used to because the friend I went with doesn't go as much now. Seems to be hard to make new friends at O meets. Have done registration to meet people, but...
I have really enjoyed the Canoe O's
I think this survey is a great idea. The volunteers that are doing this should be commended!
I would be willing to travel farther for 1 day rogains as they meet my rule of thumb, which is total driving <= hrs spent in O'ing
I would like to pair up w/ another person...They could be a mentor, or other new person. I really look forward to events. Yet it seems to be more an 'event' than a place to learn with others.
It is hard to get to know people unless you volunteer or go to events that have a place and time to talk (like potlucks), not just run.
It would help to see descriptions of tasks and whether I could run a course as well that day (i.e. schedule and time commitments)
Keep up the good work. Include info and results on the Sacto meets in the Bulletin.
More training to move from adv. beginner to intermediate. Example: we don't know how to pace. More map reading training, more family events.
Once again, I hope you'll think about the potential safety problems of kids competing alone
The more you volunteer, the friendlier people are. I loved Wed. practice sessions.
This is an excellent survey and the newsletter is the most impressive small group I've ever seen. Keep up the good work!
We particularly love Big Basin, Joe Grant, Nisene Marks. Lots of variety there.
You are on the right track, keep it up!
Longer comments:
#1
"I very much enjoy orienteering and would love to be able to do it more. It is
rather frustrating that so many of the meets tend to be national events, etc.
It seems that one has maybe one or two chances every couple of months to
attend a non-qualifying event, but you have to go to Sacramento or Santa Cruz!
I realize that you are trying to meet the needs of everyone but perhaps you are
spreading yourself too thin. I honestly don't think that Sacramento or Santa
Cruz have been considered as "Bay Area".
Maybe you should consider having Beg/Intermediate weekends and Inter/Adv
weekends and competitions, or qualifying weekends.
I think you could attract and keep more newcomers if we had more event options
that were a) within 1-1 1/2 hours drive, and b) were not attached to national
qualifying events, etc.
Thanks"
#2
"For a while I was feeling a lot of pressure w/ all the "marketing plans" and
more outreach and volunteerism needed. I want to have fun! I believe the Bay
Area is always going to be a tough place to grow the club because of all the
diversities available (e.g. sports, arts, theater, parks, etc.). The club
membership ebbs and flows, and I believe we all do the best we can to volunteer
and promote the sport. I guess I am just not a "pusher" nor a
salesperson/marketing type :-) (and will continue to volunteer at a 'sane'
level for myself.) And, that's also partly why I don't wish more events to be
held, because then I feel there would be more demands on my time, volunteeri
ng."
