Matej Å ebo on 2014 U.S. Junior Standing Team

"The Junior Team Executive Steering Committee (JTESC) is thrilled to announce the U.S. Junior Standing Team for 2014! These young women and men will represent the USA at international competitions, and train at a high level for orienteering. They have each committed to 5 hours of physical training per week, at least half of which includes orienteering or navigation. They will participate in training camps and work directly with U.S. Junior Team Coach Erin Schirm, as well as local mentors.

"Congratulations to all!"

Awards Available for Juniors

Iain "Dawg" Wilson was an accomplished orienteer who represented the USA in the World Cup in Norway and Denmark, in the Swiss Alps for the World Student Champs, and in the Scottish 6 Days. In 2000 he was the United States night orienteering champion. His life was cut short in a bicycle accident in 2008. In his memory, his family has established an award for two orienteers aged 20 or younger. Each award will be for $1000. More information can be found here (http://www.us.orienteering.org/wilsonaward). The application deadline for next year's award is December 31, 2013, so act quickly.

BAOC also has a fund available for junior orienteers. This fund is designated for meet fees, travel expenses, and other training costs for junior orienteers. Information on applying for this grant is here. Until we have a Juniors Director, I will be the contact person for applications.

Important Deadlines for Juniors

Please be aware of the following:

  1. Deadline to apply for the Junior Standing Team is fast approaching (Dec 9). Details and applications are here (http://www.orienteeringusa.org/us-teams/junior/info-for-teams). Let me know if there are any questions. (Note: The Standing Team is restricted to ~24 athletes, and is aimed at those wanting to train at a high level. The Development Team (http://www.orienteeringusa.org/us-teams/junior/dev-teams), on the other hand, is open to all juniors, and you can apply any time. The JWOC Team is also different than the Standing Team; being on the Standing Team helps you train if you want to make the JWOC Team, but you don't have to be on the Standing Team to try out for the JWOC Team.)
  2. Deadline for $1000 grants is 12/31/2013. Please submit your application soon! More information is here (http://www.orienteeringusa.org/wilsonaward).

To keep abreast of information like this, please subscribe to the Junior e-Newsletter (http://www.orienteeringusa.org/news/e-news/juniors) (see below).

Johanna Merriss 1st in F-Yellow Long

Chuck Spalding
(May 14, 2013)

I want to add that Marie-Josée is to be congratulated for her terrific showing at her first U.S. Champs. Not only did she grab two firsts in her own age category, but overall her finishes on Green were very impressive, as the only U.S. women ahead of her in the Sprint and in the very technical Long were former U.S. team members.

And kudos to George Minarik, only 14 months after his heart transplant, out there completing all the courses successfully in respectable times!
