2012 BAOC Service Award Nominations

The BAOC Service Award is given annually to a club member who has provided extraordinary service to the club and/or the sport of orienteering.

We have been requested this year to conduct the selection process as we have done in the past. The recipient is chosen by the previous BAOC Service Award Recipients. The prior recipients have been Nancy Lindeman (1994), Gary Kraght (1995), Bob Cooley (1996), Ev & Jean Beuerman (1997), Joe Scarborough (1998), Evan Custer (1999), George Minarik (2000), Gavin Wyatt-Mair (2001), Penny & Harold DeMoss (2002), Robert Lewis (2003), Steve Beuerman (2004), Scott Aster (2005), Jeff Lanam (2006), Tony Pinkham (2007), Mark Blair (2008), Jay Hann (2009), Chuck Spalding (2010), and Kelly Wells (2011). (You can read about them here.)

Note: Please do not post your nominations on the Bay-O-Net. "Secrecy" adds to the suspense, and doesn't hurt the feelings of the nominees who are not selected, who might win in future years.

Please contact any of these people with your suggestions for the 2012 Service Award, and the reasons you think the person should be selected. All suggestions are appreciated. Nominations will close on November 17.

For the record, the rules are:

  1. Candidates should be deserving club members.
  2. Previously award recipients, and the sitting president, are not eligible.

The past recipients will consider your nominations and determine the winner. The 2012 Service Award award is planned to be presented at the Willow Glen BAOC social event on Dec. 15, 2012.

There are a lot of deserving members. Please let us know your choice.

Thanks,

Bob Cooley Wins at ARDF World Event

Public Review Period for OUSA Rules

From the USOFclubnet mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USOFclubnet/) (with links added; also see notes about previous revisions below here, here, and here):

"The Orienteering USA rules committee has been working this year on a complete overhaul of the rules document. Over the past few months we have reformatted the rules, debated potential rules changes, and solicited input from committees that are heavily impacted by the rules. We are now making a preliminary draft available for public comment. Please note that this is still a draft — final touches are not complete, minor grammatical issues may not be fixed yet, appendices are not included in this draft, and some committees are still discussing changes they may want that don't occur in this draft.

"A final proposal for the Board of Directors is expected to be produced by early October for the Board to consider at their meeting on October 20th.

"The document is available in PDF format (537KB) (http://orienteeringusa.org/sites/default/files/files/documents/PreliminaryRulesDraft-Sept2012.pdf) on the OUSA website (http://www.orienteeringusa.org) by clicking on the Archive link at the bottom of the page. Direct link (http://orienteeringusa.org/sites/default/files/files/documents/PreliminaryRulesDraft-Sept2012.pdf).

"Please send any comments you may have to . Please include the phrase "OUSA Rules" in your subject line.

"Discussion that occurs on Clubnet, Attackpoint, or in any other forums, may or may not get monitored. Just because potential rule changes are being discussed somewhere does not mean that the rules committee is considering them. Please make sure that you send me a direct email about any rule changes you want the committee to consider making at this time."

Status Update on Rules Project

"Comments that have been received since the publication of the preliminary draft are now in discussion by the rules committee. I have compiled them and posted them on Google Docs. I will be updating this document as new comments are received and decisions are made by rules. The link to the document for those who wish to follow the project is: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1F5CisHgDGC_q1gQ2lwjq1EEc_znsbNFNUXyko8EwmG8/edit (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1F5CisHgDGC_q1gQ2lwjq1EEc_znsbNFNUXyko8EwmG8/edit).

"Please continue to send any comments you may have on the Rules draft or on the Google document to me directly."

Request for Delegates to OUSA AGM

Has anyone additional made plans to attend the Orienteering USA (OUSA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) (http://orienteeringusa.org/club-leaders/convention-info) in Laramie, Wyoming on September 1st (http://2012.rmoc.org/index.php/event-schedule), and wish to serve as a delegate for BAOC?

A couple of people have already volunteered, but we still have at least two more slots for delegates, and five slots for alternates. If you are interested in helping out in this capacity, please let me know by Monday, August 13th. Volunteers for this must be OUSA members as of July 31, 2012, designating BAOC as your primary club.

"1) Section B.36 – Change in the language regarding equipment that may be carried as passed by the board in April.
"2) Appendix O.7 – New version of course split guidelines."

Event Planning Meetings

We're holding a series of meetings at orienteering events to discuss events for the remainder of 2012 and in 2013. Notes from those meetings are available here.

New BAOC Event Coordinator

If you weren't able to attend the AGM at Sunol last weekend, the club membership elected Rex Winterbottom as the club's new Event Coordinator. Please welcome Rex to this important position, responsible for scheduling all BAOC events, and please contact him if you are interested in volunteering as course setter or event director. He can even arrange a mentor if you aren't ready to work on your own.

Vicki Woolworth, Kelly Wells, and I are continuing for another term as Secretary, Treasurer, and President, respectively.

Thank you to Alex Finch for serving in this role for four wonderful years!

U.S. Orienteering Rules Revised Again

From the USOFclubnet mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USOFclubnet/) (with links added; see note about previous revision below):

"The current official rules document containing the changes from the February Board meeting is available at the OUSA website (Dated Mar 5th 2012) (HTML (http://orienteeringusa.org/rules), PDF (410KB) (http://orienteeringusa.org/sites/default/files/userfiles/u6/rules.pdf)). These rules are effective for spring A-meets. All event directors and meet participants should make sure that they are familiar with the current version. This is also a reminder that event directors are expected to have a copy of the rules available on site for use by the event officials and the jury in the case of protests or other questions."

U.S. Orienteering Rules of Competition Revised

From the USOFclubnet mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USOFclubnet/) (with links added):

"The Orienteering USA Rules for Competition (revised January 10, 2012) are now available here (http://orienteeringusa.org/rules) and as a PDF file (410KB) (http://orienteeringusa.org/sites/default/files/userfiles/u6/rules.pdf). These rules are effective immediately. All sanctioned event organizers and competitors should make sure that they become familiar with the rules.

"A complete survey of all Board minutes available on the web was done to insure that the rules are up-to-date. A list of changes is included in the document. This document supersedes all previous versions. In addition to the changes listed, rule numbers were reformatted to consistently include the entire rule designation including the section letter. In a few cases, some rules were renumbered where duplication of numbering existed. In general, however, the rule numbers were not changed. Any gaps in numbering that existed have been retained. It is expected that a more thorough reformatting and renumbering of the rules will occur for the 2013 version, and I didn't see the point of renumbering two years in a row. Any documents that reference the rules by rule number are still likely to be accurate.

"If you have any questions or corrections, please send them to .

"During 2013 the rules committee will be working on a much more extensive rules revision, including reformatting the entire document and separating competition rules from sanctioning guidelines. I will do my best to keep the membership informed about our progress and issues of interest during this revision process."

Volunteer Vacancy Update

The Insurance Coordinator position has been filled by Marina Keating. Thank you Marina!

The Volunteer Coordinator and A-Meet Coordinator positions are now vacant.

A-Meet Coordinator Position:

The A-Meet Coordinator collaborates with the A-Meet Committee to schedule one to two BAOC A-meets per year, arranges for permits with the parks, and recruits Event Directors and Course Setters.
George Minarik has already arranged with the Ranger to hold an A-meet at Boggs Mountain in September 2012, but he won't be able to continue the work due to illness. We are looking for someone to take over the position and pick up where he left off on the Boggs event.
January 23 update: Gary Kraght has volunteered for this position. Thank you, Gary!

Volunteer Coordinator Position:

The number one reason that people do not volunteer is because they aren't asked! I would like to increase our pool of frequent volunteers by asking new people to help out. People who volunteer feel like they are a part of the club instead of an outsider, are more likely to renew their membership, and are more likely to later take on Event Director and Course Setter positions. If you agree that the strength of the club lies in its volunteers, and are interested in getting more people involved in the club, then this position is for you.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
