POLY25: San Luis Obispo Sprint Weekend

California Polytechnic State University — San Luis Obispo

Date: Apr. 12 - 13, 2025 CANCELED
Location: San Luis Obispo, CA
Event Director:
Course Setter: Matej Šebo
Type: A/C; Two days of Sprints, including two National Ranking Events (NREs) on Saturday

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

Unfortunately, this event has been canceled because the permit could not be obtained.

We are very grateful to Daniel Šebo for his efforts to get the permit approved, and to Matej Šebo for his work on the map.

We're excited to announce POLY25, a two-day weekend Sprint extravaganza featuring five stages. The terrain is some of the best Sprint terrain in North America: the narrow corridors, multilevel mazes, and complex building shapes of the Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo. The Cal Poly map, first used in 2023, has more than doubled in size. New terrain — treacherous and varied — awaits.

You will be challenged. Four extremely-technical urban stages on the Cal Poly campus will push your quick decision making, multilevel map reading, and route-choice visualization to its limits. The event will wrap up with a short, final stage that winds through the one-of-a-kind Architectural Graveyard. If you are fan of Sprint orienteering, and are looking for a fast-paced flurry of highly-technical courses, this event is for you.

Saturday will feature two stages on the Cal Poly campus:

  1. A mid-day Prologue
  2. An afternoon Chase (seeded by the results of the Prologue)
Note that the Saturday stages are two National Ranking Events.

Sunday will feature three stages:

  1. A morning campus Sprint
  2. An early-afternoon campus Sprint
  3. A short, late-afternoon Sprint at the Architecture Graveyard
Note that the Sunday stages are not National Ranking Events.

Much more information will be available closer to the event.

Embargo Notice

Since the Saturday stages will be National Ranking Events (NREs), the Cal Poly campus is closed to all NRE competitors before the Saturday events. At the events, everyone must stay in the Assembly Area prior to going to the Start and after returning from the Finish.

Anyone who visits the Cal Poly campus before the events (or during the events while not on a course) can still participate in the NRE stages, but will not be eligible for NRE awards or OUSA rankings for the NRE course(s).

Notes:
This embargo does not apply to people who will attend only the Sunday stages.
Any NRE competitor who has a need to go onto the Cal Poly campus (e.g., they're a student there) must contact Daniel Šebo, the Event Director (), prior to the event.

Map

The map of the Cal Poly campus is very detailed, with many multi-level situations. Some samples of the Cal Poly map are shown in the images at the right. (Click on each image to see a larger copy.)

The map samples are also available in these PDF files: Map Sample 1 (944KB PDF), Map Sample 2 (832KB PDF), and Map Sample 3 (910KB PDF).

The following reference documents might be useful:
  • The IOF International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps (ISSprOM) is available online here (https://1drv.ms/b/s!As4LDA11gDVmg4hWeTkOofphhEyfEQ) and as this PDF file (8.0MB).
  • A document that explains the mapping of complex (multi-level) urban structures is available online here (https://1drv.ms/b/s!As4LDA11gDVmgvJtteKHbteK-YrFXg) and as this PDF file (2.6MB).

Courses

More detailed course-and-class information will be available later, but there are two days and five stages (two stages on Saturday; three stages on Sunday). Each stage will have 1 or 2 courses set (likely 2). All of the courses will be set to advanced, Sprint-level difficulty (but with different lengths).

There's a chance that there will be a dedicated beginner (White/Yellow) course on Saturday, but this has not been confirmed.

Note, however, that due to the very-short course lengths, even total beginners will find finishing the shorter Sprints to be achievable, if navigationally challenging.
