Diablo Valley College

Event #3 of 6 in the BAOC 2024 Summer Series

Date: (Sun.) Jul. 7, 2024
Location: Pleasant Hill, CA
Event Director: - 925.516.7622
Course Setter: François Léonard
Type: C; This is the third event of the 2024 Summer Series. Everyone is welcome, including beginners, with free short clinics to explain orienteering.

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

Note that a special event schedule will be used.

The assembly area will be at a different location than we have used in the past.

A few reminders from the Event Director (7/6/24)

  1. See the adjusted schedule below. Courses will close promptly at 12:30.
  2. Note that the assembly area is off Viking Drive, in Parking Lot 2
  3. If you are running the Long course, make sure you have a high-capacity E-stick. If not, some will be available to rent at the registration table.

This event will be the third of six events in the 2024 Summer Series. However, we want to emphasize that everyone is welcome to come out and do one (or more) of the courses, regardless of whether or not you have attended, or plan to attend, other Summer Series events.

We encourage beginners to attend, no experience is necessary. The DVC campus has many distinctive landmarks, so anyone should be able to navigate the Beginner course.

The conditions of our permit do not allow us to serve food at the event, so we will not be able to supply the usual snacks. Thus, this event will be BYOS (Bring Your Own Snacks).

We look forward to seeing everyone at what is always a fun event!

Note: If you're planning to bring a group larger than 10, please reach out to Marie-Josée Parayre, the Event Director (), so we can plan accordingly (e.g., print enough maps).

Beginners

Beginner clinics will be available to introduce orienteering. They are short, repeating sessions that explain orienteering maps and the process for completing a course. Of course, it's up to the participants to be able to read their map and navigate to the controls on their course. That should not be too difficult at this feature-rich venue.

Schedule

Because of the expected high temperatures, the following special event schedule will be followed:

8:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Registration open
8:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Beginner clinics instruction (free)
8:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Starts are open for all the courses
12:30 PM: Courses close, checkpoint control pick-up begins
Note: At registration, all juniors (i.e., under age 21) must be accompanied by parents or legal guardians, or bring with them a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. (The registration form is available here (12KB PDF).)

Note that you can register and start on the courses anytime during the open times above. Thus, for example, you do not need to be "punctual" at 8:00 (but you can if you want, but please don’t show up earlier and expect to be served).

Beginner clinics are 15–20 minute, repeating sessions that introduce the sport of orienteering, and provide enough instruction to be able to complete the Beginner course.

Note that you must return to the Finish by 12:30 PM, and then go to the download tent, even if you have not finished your course. Please do not leave without checking in! If there are unaccounted people after 12:30, we must initiate a search for them.

Location on Campus

The assembly area will be at a different location this year than in the past. We will meet in Parking Lot 2 off Viking Drive. That is on the south side of the campus, the opposite side of the campus from our previous meeting place. Driving directions are below.

Venue Facilities

There are water and restrooms near the assembly area.

What to Bring

Comfortable outdoors attire and walking shoes are fine for those who will walk their course.

For runners, any comfortable running shoes (without metal spikes) are appropriate. Courses will include lots of pavement and concrete, and possibly some "off-trail" legs.

A compass is not necessary, but can be helpful. We have compasses available for a $1 rental fee.

We time the courses with the SPORTident system, so a SPORTident fingerstick is required for each team—they rent for $5. (Use of the "E-punch" system is easy. You can learn how at the event, or read about it here.)

Note: Please do not bring a dog to the event. They are not permitted on the campus.

Courses

As for all the Summer Series events, there will be Beginner, Short, and Long courses.

Here are course details:

    Course Length Climb Controls
    Beginner 1.6 km Minimal 12
    Short 3.1 km 30 m 23
Long 5.6 km 50 m 35     (See the note below!)

Note that the course lengths shown are "best-route" (which is normally given for Sprint courses), not "straight-line".
Since the Long course has 35 controls, the finger stick used must have "extended" capacity. (See the Course Setter’s Notes for details.)

The Short and Long courses will be the ranking courses for the respective Summer Series.

Keep in mind that you can earn Summer Series points from the first course you run at the event, and only if it's one of the ranking courses. That is, you will not earn points if you run the Beginner course first, and then one of the ranking courses.

Be sure to read the Course Setter’s Notes for more information.

Important Notes:

This event will observe Sprint rules for all the courses, which means there are strict interpretations of some of the symbols on the map. In particular, some symbols indicate features that must not be crossed (i.e., even if it's physically possible to cross them), and areas that are out of bounds (i.e., must not be entered). If you don't know about those symbols, be sure to ask somebody before going to the Start. Be sure to see the additional comments in the Course Setter’s Notes.
In addition to being against orienteering rules, violating those restrictions could jeopardize our ability to hold events on the campus in the future!
The Long course will involve a map flip. Be sure to read about it in the Course Setter’s Notes.

2024 Summer Series

This is the third event of the BAOC 2024 Summer Series. The Series consists of six events, each of which has two "ranking courses" for the overall "Short" and "Long" Summer Series results. At this event, points will be awarded to all the individuals (but not groups or teams) who complete the Short or Long course (as their first course at the event).

Details of the Summer Series scoring system are available here. (Note that we need your birth year if you want to be scored properly.)

Volunteers

As always, this event can't happen without volunteers. We have openings for these tasks:

It's very easy to help, and it helps us have an event for all of us to enjoy. Of course, you get to do your course, too!

Not sure what to help with? Just want to help with something? Just contact me, and I can help you find a helpful role.

Please contact me if you can help.

Thank you kindly, Marie-Josée Parayre, Event Director ()
