General Notes
- This is a training course, not an organized BAOC event. We do not have a park permit for this course.
- Be careful for your safety. You are on your own—tell somebody where you will be and when you expect to return.
- You are doing this at your own risk. Each participant assumes full responsibility (BAOC accepts no responsibility) for any and all injuries, losses, and damages that he or she incurs while attending or participating in this course.
- Be mindful of the general COVID-19 restrictions, and any specific restrictions that might apply to the park.
I have set a new Sunol training course. It is a 5 km course on a seldom-used part of the park, with 12 controls, 500 m of climb.
The map is available here (2.9MB PDF). The scale is 1:10,000 with 5 m contours. The course is also available on O-range (https://www.storler.no/orange/) (another app for Garmin watches). Thanks to Bill Cosworth for the new geo-referenced map.
The controls have been flagged with pink streamers. There are no control descriptions—just look for what's in the middle of the circle.
The streamers at 1 and 2 are a bit off to avoid some nasty vegetation around the controls. There is sparse, low poison oak in some areas.
The course is accessed from Welsh Creek Road (which is not the road to the park entrance). There is a small, rugged parking area at this location: 37.533140,-121.832906 (http://www.google.com/maps/place/37.533140,-121.832906/@37.533140,-121.832906,15z). There is a flatter option about 200 m up the road.
Note that on weekends and holidays, you must first obtain a parking permit from the kiosk at the main entrance (http://www.google.com/maps/place/37.515402,-121.832444/@37.515402,-121.832444,15z) to the park.
Enjoy,
François Léonard
