Huddart Park

Date: (Sun.) Apr. 16, 2017
Location: Woodside, CA
Event Director: - 408.599.9709
Course Setter: Werner Haag
Type: C; 100-minute Score-O with about 34 controls, a mix of beginner to advanced difficulty, using pin punches (no E-punch)

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

We have verbal approval from the rangers to hold an event at Huddart Park on Easter Sunday, April 16th. I got a request to do another corporate event there on Tuesday the 18th, so I want to combine efforts by leaving some of the controls out from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning.

This will be a somewhat informal Score-O event.

Pre-registration is not required, but please let know if you're thinking of coming, so I get an idea of how many maps to print. I'm hoping to get more than 50 people, so we can cover the cost of the permit and site rental.

Schedule

Registration will be open from about 10 AM to noon.

Beginner's clinics will be available starting around 10:30 AM.

Starts will be available from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM (see the Course Setter's Notes for comments).

The course will close at 2:00 PM. All participants must return by then.

Costs

The following fees apply at this event:

  $5 for juniors
$12 for members
$18 for non-members
$1 for a compass rental (optional)
$15 for the lowest-cost individual one-year BAOC membership (optional)

For extra people on a team, add $7 per adult or $3 per junior.

(As an aside, please be aware that this venue has fairly high costs. Thus, we're hoping that lots of people will attend even though this is a "minor" event.)

Course

There will be one Score-O "course". About 34 controls will be scattered around the park, with beginner to advanced difficulty. Your goal will be to find as many of them as possible, in any order, within 100 minutes. (A fast runner is likely to reach all the controls in about 90 minutes.)

Each control found will "earn" 10 points. However, 5 points will be deducted for each minute (or fraction) that you're overtime.

Note that, unlike most BAOC events, there will not be beginner courses at this event. However, the nature of this event will accommodate all levels of skill, from beginner to advanced.

If you don't want to be competitive, and aren't worried about your score, but want to take it easy and enjoy the woods as much as possible, you are welcome to stay out from 11 AM to 2 PM. However, please note that all participants must return by 2:00 PM.

On the other hand, if you're interested in a shorter outing, you are not required to stay out on the course for the full 100 minutes.

Be sure to read the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

Event Details

The Start and Finish will be at the Zweierlein Picnic Area.

This event will not use E-punch. The controls will have pin punches, and you will punch on the clue sheet inserted in the map case behind the map.

The map scale will be "about" 1:5000.

Request for Help

As always, volunteers will be needed for this event. Specifically, we could use one person each for the following tasks:

A little help on control pick-up would be appreciated, but this should be easy since we will be leaving half the controls out there for Tuesday's event, and the ones being picked up will be the more visible ones close to roads & trails and thus largely accessible by car.

Driving Directions

From the Bayshore Freeway (US 101) or Interstate 280 on the Peninsula, go west on Highway 84 (Woodside Road). About a mile west of I-280, you will come to a stop sign at the intersection of Mountain Home, Cañada Road, and Woodside Road (near Roberts Market). (Heed the 25 mph speed limit in Woodside!) Continue straight for 0.7 miles to Kings Mountain Road. Turn right (northwest) and follow Kings Mountain Road for 2.1 miles to the park entrance. Pay your fee at the entrance station and follow the park signs to the Zweierlein Picnic Area. Park in any of the designated areas along the road (there is additional parking about 150 meters after you pass the event location).

There is a park entry fee of $6 per vehicle. If the entry kiosk is not staffed, you must use a self-service process nearby (which involves putting exact cash in an envelope).

There's a map here that shows the location of the event. The official park map is available here (PDF/525KB) (http://parks.smcgov.org/huddart-park-map).
