Come on out to San Francisco's Presidio on Sunday, January 31st for some scenic and challenging orienteering.

The selection of courses previously described has been changed. Since the Presidio provides such great options for longer courses, our course setter has decided to have a different set of courses instead of just Sprints. See below for more information.

Location Within the Park

Registration, starts, and finishes will be on the west side of Fort Winfield Scott (see directions below), the same place we have used multiple times in the past.

Schedule

The standard event schedule will be used:

Administration

Please note the following:

Beginner clinics will be offered throughout the morning. They are short, repeating sessions that introduce orienteering and explain how to complete a course. No orienteering knowledge is required for this event. Just show up and learn what all the excitement is about. We'll have you out on a course in no time.

The standard fees will apply.

Training Activities for Juniors

is planning to have a pre-course activity and course review at this event. The plan is to meet at 10:30 AM. We will make a pre-race plan. Then everyone will run their courses and we will finish with a course review.

If you're interested in participating, please contact in advance.

Courses

The following five courses will be offered:

   Course Length Climb Controls
   White 1.3 km 10 m 6
   Yellow 2.4 km 40 m 9
   Sprint 1.7 km 25 m 13
   Medium 3.8 km 110 m 14
   Long 6.0 km 135 m 18

Note: Beginners should be aware that the distances shown are the cumulative straight-line distances between controls. Your actual distance will be longer. The climb numbers represent the amount of ascending that would be done on the "optimum route" (in the Course Setter's opinion), without regard for any descending.

Multiple courses can be run if desired, since the courses are mostly separate from each other.

Be sure to read the Course Setters' Notes for more information.

Driving Directions

Note: Read the directions carefully, as no signs will be provided because of park rules.

All the action will start from the west part of Fort Winfield Scott at Building 1205. This is the location we've used in past years.

A map showing the event location is at the right. You can use the + button to zoom in to see the details, and click on the Satellite button to see an aerial view. (A larger map is available here.)

Coming from the South or East: Head to the Golden Gate Bridge. Take the last SF exit on Doyle Drive, just before the toll plaza. Turn right onto Lincoln Blvd. Continue under the overpass. Park in the large lot on your left after the stop sign at Lincoln Blvd and Ralston Ave. If you park there, Building 1205 is east, across Ralston Ave.

Coming from Marin: Exit immediately after the toll plaza onto Merchant Road. Turn right at the stop sign, and park in the large lot immediately on your left (between Lincoln Blvd and Ralston Ave). If you park there, Building 1205 is east, across Ralston Ave.

Parking

Parking is plentiful around Fort Scott, but several of the lots now charge to park. Rates are $7 all day, so you should plan accordingly. There are also many free spots scattered around the area, especially if you are willing to walk a bit to get from there to registration.

There is a large lot just west of the registration area. It is the most convenient location. If the lot is full, you may park along Ralston Ave and between the buildings on Ralston Ave. Parking is also available on the east side of the fields that are next to the registration area.

Wherever you park, please be mindful of conserving space so we can fit in everyone's cars, and consider the affect your car might have on traffic, pedestrians, etc. (Also, be aware that the park police office is nearby, so there's a good chance they will see your car.)

Note: Please do not park near the Log Cabin! Those spaces are reserved for events at the Log Cabin.
