Bon Tempe Reservoir — Limited Event

Date: (Sun.) Jan. 24, 2016
Location: Fairfax, CA
Event Director: - 415.378.6416
Course Setter: Greg Ehrensing
Type: C; Low-key, "pop-up" event; LIMITED ATTENDANCE; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

We've heard of "pop-up" stores and "pop-up" restaurants, how about a "pop-up" orienteering event at Bon Tempe? The Marin Municipal Water District has issued a permit for a very-low-key, bare-bones event on Sunday, January 24, at Bon Tempe Lake. It's so bare bones that there will be no beginner courses and probably no e-punch either.

Courses will be the usual Short, Medium, and Long. Short would be like Brown, Medium like Green, and Long like (a rugged) Blue.

Starts would be offered from 10 AM to noon, from a different location than in the past, down near the dam.

Some map revisions have been made, and the "hillside of death" might actually be navigable.

The forecast calls for a break in the weather, with rain unlikely. The lake is full and Bon Tempe is green and beautiful.

Important Information!

This event is being treated like our club's annual volunteer appreciation event. That means strong preference is given to people who have volunteered at one of our events sometime during 2015.

Because of the limits imposed by the Marin Water District, our host, this be a low-key event with limited participation and no signage. Thus, preregistration is required, and, if necessary, preference will be given to Event Directors, Course Setters, and Registration and E-Punch volunteers. Preregister by sending an e-mail to stating your course preference: Short, Medium, or Long.

You can change the course selection later, but we'd like to have a rough idea of how many maps to print for each course.

Note: Do not simply show up at the event. Everyone must preregister.

This event is free to all participants! The only expense is the toll at the ranger kiosk, which is $8.00 per car. This kiosk is staffed sometimes, but usually not, so you will most likely need to use their electronic toll machine that takes cash up to $10 bills, but does not always return change! You can also use your debit or credit card to pay at the machine.

Manual pin-punch controls will probably be used, so E-sticks might not be needed.

More information might be available closer to the event.

Training Session

With the unofficial Bon Tempe event happening, I figured training this week could latch onto that. I plan to design a short training exercise that you can do before your course.

Plan to be there by 10 AM for the training. Keep an eye out for more details on the meeting location for the courses—that's were we will base the training from.

Please contact in advanced so I can print a map for you.

Let me know if you have questions. I will send specifics on the training exercise to the BAOCT training list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BAOCT/) on Friday. Thanks.

Driving Directions

The first challenge of the event is to locate it! Due to MMWD rules, no directional signs will be posted. There are several ways to get to Bon Tempe from Highway 101 in Marin. the default route is listed here:

From Highway 101 in Greenbrae, take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd exit, and go west for 5.5 miles to the town of Fairfax. Turn left at Claus Dr (Rino gas station on the right), and then immediately take another left onto Broadway. Turn right at the next corner, which is Bolinas Rd.

Stay on Bolinas Rd for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the large, brown, wooden sign with white lettering that says "Lake Lagunitas". Stay on this road until you reach the ranger kiosk. Pay the entrance fee ($8 per car) at the pay-and-display machine (see comments above).
