Course Setter's Notes
By Holly Gaston
Come enjoy a set of orienteering courses on the beautiful UC Berkeley campus. Beginner, Sprint, and Middle-distance courses will be available. Sprint and Middle course participants will be challenged to navigate complicated multilevel buildings.
Given the campus venue, the courses cross roads and parking lots, so be aware of vehicle traffic.
There are also active construction zones on campus, including one adjacent to the Registration, Start, and Finish areas near Barrows Hall. The map has been updated recently to reflect this construction, but the construction areas may have shifted by the event date. Be prepared for construction zones that are larger or smaller than mapped.
The map scale is 1:3750, so distances will seem shorter than usual. The contour interval is 2.5 m. The north/south lines are diagonal instead of vertical, so be careful when orienting the map. Matej Sebo recently updated the map (thanks!).
Here are the course details:
Course Length Climb Controls Beginner 2.1 km 60 m 13 Sprint 2.3 km 75 m 14 Middle 4.2 km 150 m 16
Two comments regarding control descriptions:
- The "upper" and "lower" control-description symbols are used in some cases to help participants determine whether a control is on the upper or lower level of a multi-level building. For the purpose of clarity, these symbols have been used regardless of whether or not there are actually two identical features within the control circle (i.e., one on the upper level and one on the lower level).
- The "stone wall" symbol is used to indicate when the control feature is a wall, even though the walls on campus are not all actually made of stone.
