TrailCross Presidio

Presidio of San Francisco

Date: (Sat.) Apr. 19, 2014 CANCELED
Location: San Francisco, CA
Event Director: - 510.652.9631
Course Setter: Mikkel Conradi
Type: C; 5 km, 10 km, and 10-mile trail runs with twists! Part of BAOC's 2014 TrailCross series (pending park approval)

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

Please Note: This event has been canceled because the permit was denied.

The permit was denied because the Presidio is not approving any new trail races in calendar year 2014.
We don’t have another date for the event. We're probably going to do it somewhere else, perhaps in Golden Gate Park or Maclaren Park.

TrailCross comes to the Presidio!

Explore and discover the many nooks, crannies, and wild corners of the Presidio! Start with a map and take roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails from checkpoint to checkpoint. Your challenge will be to find the quickest route among the many alternatives. Fully stocked aid stations will refresh you along the way of this trail run with a twist.

Event Schedule

Note that this event is on Saturday. Registration, Start, and Finish are at:

Fort Winfield Scott
The Presidio
San Francisco, CA

There's a map here that shows the location of the event. See directions below.

The event schedule is as follows:

  9:00 – Registration Open, Beginner's Clinics available
  9:40 – Course Briefing
10:00 – Mass Start
10:01 – Individual Starts available until 10:30
12:30 – Award Ceremony (estimated)
  1:30 – Courses Close

Note that everyone must report to the Finish by the closing time, even if they have not completed their course.

How it Works

At each checkpoint, there will be an orange and white, 1-foot-tall "control" (marker) with an electronic box to record your visit. Similar to a chip timing system, the runner will carry a "chip" attached to a finger strap, and will "punch" the electronic box at each checkpoint. This will record your visit to each checkpoint. (See our User's Guide to Electronic Punching for more information.)

You must visit the checkpoints in the order indicated on your map to complete the course successfully.

All of the above will be covered in the pre-race instructions.

Refreshments and Results

After you complete your course, have some snacks and swap stories from your adventure! We will recognize the top male and female participants for each of the three distances, plus the top Masters (40 years of age and over) and the top Juniors (20 years of age and younger) in each gender.

Complete results will be posted on the BAOC website after the event.

Registration

For a price discount (see below), preregister by Tuesday, April 15. (Preregistration details will be available later.)

After April 15, it's still a good idea to preregister, because it helps us properly estimate supplies and it makes event-day registration go more quickly.

Costs

The event fees listed below include use of a SPORTident electronic e-stick to "punch" at each control, the use of a compass (while supplies last), and a small plastic whistle. Please bring your own compass if you have one. Snack food and water will be provided free of charge at the aid stations.

If you will be participating as a group, please note that each person will need to register and pay separately.

Please note that even if you register ahead of time, you will need to check in at the event, to pick up your SPORTident e-stick (if you don't have your own) or to register your personal e-stick, so we can enter you in our results system.

If you are unable to attend the event, we will transfer your fees to a future TrailCross event. Unfortunately we are not able to give refunds.

More Information

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions on TrailCross are available here.

If you're interested in events that are more off-trail, please check the Bay Area Orienteering Club schedule to see upcoming events. Also check out the BAOC Wilderness Scramble Series for events where you pick your own route.

Please note that it is very important that you observe the out-of-bounds areas indicated on the map. In particular, note that only roads and mapped sidewalks and trails can be used in residential areas. We could be prohibited from using the park in the future if people cross out-of-bounds areas.

Driving Directions

Read the directions carefully—no signs will be provided because of park rules.

The following directions are subject to change regarding the exact location of the event. These directions should get you close enough to find us.

All the action will start from the west part of Fort Winfield Scott at Building 1205. This is the location we used last year. This is southeast of the intersection of Lincoln Blvd and Ralston Ave.

A map showing the event location is at the right. You can use the + button to zoom in to see the details, and click on the Satellite button to see an aerial view. (A larger map is available here.)

Coming from the South or East: Head to the Golden Gate Bridge. Take the last SF exit on Doyle Drive, just before the toll plaza. Turn right onto Lincoln Blvd. Continue under the overpass. Park in the large lot on your left after the stop sign at Lincoln Blvd and Ralston Ave. If you park there, Building 1205 is east, across Ralston Ave.

Coming from Marin: Exit immediately after the toll plaza onto Merchant Road. Turn right at the stop sign, and park in the large lot immediately on your left (between Lincoln Blvd and Ralston Ave). If you park there, Building 1205 is east, across Ralston Ave.

Parking

There is a large lot just west of the registration area (it has disappeared and reappeared repeatedly during the construction project). It is the most convenient location. If the lot is full, you may park along Ralston Ave and between the buildings on Ralston Ave. Parking is also available on the east side of the fields that are next to the registration area.

Wherever you park, please be mindful of conserving space so we can fit in everyone's cars, and consider the affect your car might have on traffic, pedestrians, etc. (Also, be aware that the park police office is nearby, so there's a good chance they will see your car.)

Note: Please do not park near the Log Cabin! Those spaces are reserved for events at the Log Cabin.

Public Transit

From the Daly City BART station, take Muni Bus #28 (departures every 10 min.) to Merchant Road at the overpass under Doyle Drive, about 32 min.
