Course Statistics and Notes
Course | Optimal Distance | Climb | |
---|---|---|---|
White | 2.5 km | 75 m | |
Orange | 5.5 km | 150 m | |

Snowshoe trails are mapped as the permanent network of Northstar's trails. Not all of them have been freshly walked on by snowshoes, so some might be indistinctly marked or not seen. In most locations, snowshoe trail signs are spaced about 30 to 70 meters apart.
Not all trails have been mapped by GPS, so some trail locations are approximate and not exact.
One-Day Embargo Area for Competitors
If you are competing in this event, the entire Northstar Cross Country trail system is embargoed to competitors the day before the event. This embargo does not include the downhill area. Any exceptions to this embargo must be made by an Event Director.
Instructions for Check-in, Registration, Gondola, Cross Country Center
Everybody needs to either register or check-in to get their gondola pass. Then go to the gondola and the Cross Country Center. Here's a map showing where you need to go to register or check-in for the event:
The map shows the parking area with a Start triangle, the registration/checkin area (Starbucks cafe) as control #1, the gondola loading area as control #2, the gondola exit as control #3, and the Cross Country Center as the Finish. At the Cross Country Center, you can drop off your non-valuables that you don't want to carry while racing. After you drop off your stuff, you go about one mile up the hill to the start area near Saw Mill Flats. Near the starting area, you will cross two downhill tracks — Please be careful when crossing the downhill tracks!!!
The course setter and director for this event are Brenda Giese and Jonathan Owens. Check the Registration/Check-In station at Starbucks to see if they have any special information other than the course stats below.
Registration and Prices
Pre-registration has closed, but you can register at the event. Event fees are required of all competitors (but not of guardians that shadow children on a course). Trail passes are required only if you do not already have a trail pass for that day.

Beginner Clinics
Free beginner clinics, which typically last 15 to 20 minutes, are available to any competitor who needs to learn how to use the map and learn about the rules of the sport. If you need a beginner clinic, let the registrar or event director know and we will direct you to the person giving the clinics. Typically, we have a person assigned to give clinics from 9:30 to 11:00. After 11:00, we can find someone to give you the clinic but you might have to wait a few minutes.
Starts
All competitors will be assigned start times between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM on a first-come-first-serve basis. Typically, you get faster snow with the earlier start times.
Directions
From the Bay Area, Sacramento, or Reno:
- Take Interstate 80 to Highway 267 (Exit 188B) just east of Truckee.
- Go south on Highway 267 (in the direction of King's Beach) for 5.5 miles to Northstar Drive.
- Turn right onto Northstar Drive and go 1.6 miles to Northstar Resort.
- Follow instructions given at the site for parking.
Go to the Starbucks cafe in the Northstar Village to check in (required of all competitors), get discounted trail passes, and to register. See the map above or at Registration for how to get to the gondola and then from the gondola to the Cross Country Center, where you must pre-punch before going to the starts, which are about 1 mile up the hill. Allow 60–90 minutes or more to check-in or register, take the gondola, pre-punch at the Cross Country Center, and ski uphill to the starts.
Note: The 1-mile trek to the Starts crosses two downhill courses. Be very careful and cross only when no skiers are coming. It is best to escort small children by these crossings.
Food
Northstar Village has numerous eateries in the village. You can also get food at the building by the top of the chairlift, and you can purchase some snack food at the cross country center by the start of the cross country trails.
