We will return to the new Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline map this year with an area that sports a wide variety of terrain. Just when you think you've got one nailed, you move to a new area!

This is our first event of the calendar year, and the west side of the park is rumored to be a great location to watch commercial aircraft on approach to runway two niner. This is also a popular park for dog walkers, and many take advantage of the "off leash" areas.

Schedule

9:00 AM – 12:00 noon: Registration
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Starts for all courses
1:30 PM: Courses closed, you must be back even if you didn't finish your course.

Punching

As always, we will be using electronic punching at this meet, using SPORTident finger sticks. The following models are supported: SI-Card 5, SI-Card 6, SI-Card 8, and SI-Card 9. Finger sticks are available for rent at the meet. In addition, you can get a finger stick to keep all season with your season pass.

Registration

Normal meet fees apply. But we are giving everyone a special deal — run additional courses for free, as training courses that don't get published in the results.

Course Notes

There will be no water on the courses. There are also no water fountains at this time, so please bring your own water.

The lawn area near the restroom has had its trees removed and re-sodded. It is currently fenced off and is out-of-bounds. The area to the north, near a newly constructed bridge, is no longer out-of-bounds.

The park is fairly flat and open. Current conditions are delightful. The blue or black × symbols on the map are various types of capped wellheads and access hatches, variously from ground level (flush) to one meter high. There are the usual unmapped minor paths. Many fence lines have only the poles remaining, with no wires between. An area in the middle of the map has recently had new dirt (a quarter million cubic yards) and grading. There are amazing 360-degree views from many points.

There are a few hazards: some barbed wire, some rebar, gopher holes, dogs on and off leash, joggers, paintball players. Allow five minutes to walk to Registration/Start/Finish. The drinking water at the park entrance is not currently functional. There is a pit toilet near registration.

Courses 1 and 2 are completely independent, for those wanting to do both. Walking or running gear should suffice for courses 1 and 2. Courses 3 and 4 are mostly independent from courses 5 and 6.

Driving Directions

From north or south I-880 (Nimitz), exit 33B Marina Blvd. Go right/West on Marina Blvd about 1.3 miles, to a short right turn lane at Neptune Dr, just before the main road bends left. Turn right/North on Neptune Dr, go 0.6 miles to the end. Park on the street.

There's a map here that shows the location of the event.

Public Transit

Public transportation is poor in this area. Your best bet is to BART to San Leandro station, then walk 2.7 miles or hire a taxi cab. Better yet, maybe people can carpool...

  2. Turn right at Williams St – About 39 mins go 2.0 mi
  3. Turn right at Neptune Dr – About 9 mins go 0.5 mi – Total 2.7 mi
