I am in need of a someone to vet the Twin Peaks Score-O course over the holiday weekend to check the control locations and clue understandability.

There are approximately 25 controls placed in the geographic center of San Francisco, stretching from Glen Park Canyon up to Mt Sutro. They can be visited at race pace or toured on a more leisurely basis. I will send a preview copy of the map for you to print.

This would obviously be ideal for someone unable to attend the December 5th event.

Thank-you,

Think you know San Francisco? Think again! After a few years off, we'll revisit our most urban map on Sunday, December 5th with an event right in the geographic center of San Francisco. There is a surprising number of wooded and open areas, along with hidden stairways and amazing views. The atmosphere of the city changes every few blocks, as can the weather!

Courses

This will be a Score-O format for all courses. The goal with Score-O is to get to as many controls as possible within the given time limit. Beginning orienteers will appreciate the easy to intermediate control locations, while seasoned veterans will be challenged with surprisingly difficult route choices on the more distant controls.

There will be a 90-minute time limit for all competitors. All controls will count as one point regardless of difficulty. The hard part is figuring out which controls to visit and in what order. There is a penalty of one point per minute (or part thereof) for staying out longer than 90 minutes. For controls we will use a mixture of unique features like lamppost numbers, signs, etc. You will mark the correct answers, multiple-choice style, on a sheet we provide with the map.

Be sure to read the Course Setters' Notes for more information.

Schedule

Please note that everyone must report back at the Finish by 1:30, so we know that you have returned safely.

Location

This event will begin and end at the Midtown Terrace Playground and Recreation Center at the corner of Clarendon Ave and Olympia Way, on the west side of Mt. Sutro. This new location is ideal, with a real neighborhood feel, large green lawn (bring your frisbee), real restrooms, and plenty of street parking!

After the event, make it a day of shopping by releasing the inner hippie down the hill in the Haight-Ashbury district. Or refuel on a Mission burrito, or brunch in the flamboyant Castro — all nearby!

There's a map here that shows the location of the event. (You can zoom in, and drag the map, to home in on the playground.)

Event Coordinator's Comments

"Mark Prior is back in town and Twin Peaks is back on the schedule. Mark is promising an urban Score-O with a fair amount of off-road action — both 1-hour and 2-hour categories. So come out and enjoy a run in the center of San Francisco with wonderful views.

"If you have been considering learning to be an Event Director, this would be a great event to help Mark with. A single location for Start, Finish, and registration. No controls to pick up. Contact or , and we'll get you set up to succeed!"
