We will return to the new Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline map this year with an area that sports a wide variety of terrain. Just when you think you've got one nailed, you move to a new area!
This is our first event of the calendar year, and the west side of the park is rumored to be a great location to watch comercial aircraft on approach to runway two niner. This is also a popular park for dog walkers, and many take advantage of the "off leash" areas.
- 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon: Registration
- 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM: All courses starts
- 1:30 PM: Courses closed, must be back even if you didn't finish your course.
As always, we will be using electronic punching at this meet, using SPORTident finger sticks. The following models are supported: SI-Card 5, SI-Card 6, SI-Card 8, and SI-Card 9. Finger sticks are available for rent at the meet. In addition, you can get a finger stick to keep all season with your season pass.
Normal meet fees apply. But we are giving everyone a special deal---run additional courses for free.
Course Setters' Notes
First, I'd like to welcome first time course setters Bronwen and Wayne Caplinger, and vetter Angela Hunter. Thanks, guys!
Course 1: Setter: Bronwen Caplinger, Vetters: Angela Hunter, Jay Hann Course 2: Setter: Wayne Caplinger, Vetter: Jay Hann Course 3, 4: Jay Hann
Second, this is the first meet of the year, and to celebrate we will have a cup of sparkling cider for the first fifty finishers (or until the sixteen bottles are empty).
There will be no water on the courses.
Here are the preliminary course statistics for Sunday:
Percent Navigation Course Length Climb Controls climb difficulty
White/Course 1 2.2 km 18 m 17 0.8% Beginner Yellow/Course 2 2.6 km 33 m 13 1.3% Adv. Beginner Orange/Course 3 3.1 km 65 m 21 2.1% Intermediate Brown/Course 4 3.4 km 70 m 27 2.1% Advanced
That's not a misprint. There are twenty-seven controls on course 4. And only the two GO controls are shared between any courses.
The park is fairly flat and open. Current conditions are delightful. The blue or black Xs on the map are various types of capped wellheads and access hatches, variously from ground level (flush) to one meter high. There are the usual unmapped minor paths. Many fence lines have only the poles remaining, with no wires between. An area in the middle of the map has recently had new dirt (a quarter million cubic yards) and grading. There are amazing 360-degree views from many points.
There are a few hazards: some barbed wire, some rebar, gopher holes, dogs on and off leash, joggers, paintball players. Allow five minutes to walk to Registration/Start/Finish. There is drinking water at the park entrance, and a pit toilet near registration.
Courses 1 and 2 are completely independent, for those wanting to do both. Walking or running gear should suffice for courses 1 and 2. Course 3 and 4 are completely independent as well.
The contours on the newly created hills are a guess on Jay's part.
Some of the scrubby areas have been re-mapped with way too many individual bushes and dog trails. Only the major dog trails visible from the air in September were mapped. There are many more minor trails. The current lush carpet of grass has partially obscured some of the trails. All maps are printed at a 1:4000 scale with 2.5-meter contours.
From north or south I-880 (Nimitz), exit 33B Marina Blvd. Go right / West on Marina Blvd about 1.3 miles, to a short right turn lane at Neptune, just before the main road bends left. Turn right / North on Neptune Dr, go 0.6 miles to the end. Park on the street.
There's a map here that shows the location of the event.
Public transportation is poor in this area. Your best bet is to BART to San Leandro station, then walk 2.7 miles or hire a taxi cab. Better yet, maybe people can carpool...
Google walking directions from San Leandro Bart Station:
- Head southeast on San Leandro Blvd toward Parrott St – About 5 mins go 0.2 mi
- Turn right at Williams St – About 39 mins go 2.0 mi
- Turn right at Neptune Dr – About 9 mins go 0.5 mi – Total 2.7 mi
