This year's Volunteer Appreciation Event will be held this coming weekend, Saturday, Nov. 13, and Sunday, Nov. 14, at Bon Tempe Reservoir in Fairfax (Marin County). In hosting this event, Harold and I (and BAOC) wish to recognize the tireless efforts of the many volunteers who have given of their time (and money) during the year to further BAOC's goal of providing quality orienteering events.

Bon Tempe is a our favorite venue of all the club maps. When you look around at the beautiful scenery, the alpine lakes, mature woods, wildlife ... well, it's hard to believe you're only a few minutes from civilization. And no cattle grazing to chew up the footing ... terrific place. It'll be great ... I'm sure the turtles will be sunning themselves this year.

Unfortunately, the Marin Municipal Water District limits the numbers of participants in organized events. Pre-registration was required and we have filled up for both days. Funny, when the weather report came out as "fair and warm" for this weekend, there was a sudden rush for those last couple spots!

We have reserved the shelter by the rear parking lot for both days. Bring some dry clothes to change into and stick around for some treats ... coffee, tea, and cold drinks (special this year!), snacks, etc.

This event is free, except for the park entry fee, which is now $8. You will have to pay at the machine as you enter. Please note: The machine takes only these bills: $1, $5, and $10. It does give change, but does not accept $20 bills or coins.

We will be using pin punching ... decided to give the E-punch people the day off. So, dig out your old split watches if you want to compare splits afterward. Since the forecast is for dry and warm weather both days, we will combine the results into one list.

The map scale is 1:10,000 with a contour interval of 12.2 m (40 ft). The area is a mixture of open grassland, mature (sometimes dense) woods, oak savannah, rock features, water features, and areas of very dense french broom and dead fall. The poison oak is bright red right now, and you should have no trouble avoiding it. The green grass is already starting to come up ... it's very nice out there right now.

Starts will be from 10 AM to 12 noon each day, with course closures at 2:00 PM. On Sunday, we would appreciate it if three or four people could stay and help pick up controls.

The courses on offer are as follows:

  Course Length Climb Controls
  Short 3.8 km 190 m 10
  Medium 5.4 km 290 m 13
  Long 7.0 km 365 m 20

Driving Directions

From Highway 101 in Greenbrae, take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd exit, and go West for 5.5 miles to the town of Fairfax. Turn left at Claus Dr (Rino gas station on the right), and then immediately take another left onto Broadway.

Turn right at the next corner, which is Bolinas Rd. Stay on Bolinas Rd for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the large, brown, wooden sign with white lettering that says "Lake Lagunitas".

Stay on this road until you reach the ranger kiosk. Pay the entrance fee ($8) at the pay-and-display machine. Proceed on the road to the parking lot at the very end. (Do not turn right on the gravel road to Bon Tempe Dam.)

Note: There will not be any orienteering signs posted, since the Water District requests that we keep a low profile.
