The event at Bayfront is part of the 2010 U.S. Sprint Series (http://www.sprintseries.org). If you intend to participate in the Sprint Series (which, of course, is optional), please run the Sprint (Course 3) first. After that, you can go on the longer Course 4 — and even challenge yourself by doing it as a Memory-O.

The normal event schedule (and fees) will apply:

Special Note for Scouts: Scouts who participate on the White course (Course 1) or Yellow course (Course 2) can get their 2nd requirement for First Class (Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items [tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.]) signed off if they report at the Finish the height of the tower that is part of their course (Control #4 on Course 1; Control #2 on Course 2). Scouts who successfully complete a course will be offered the opportunity to purchase the patches shown below.

Course Setter's Notes

By Manfred Kopisch

Setting courses at Bayfront was a pleasure this year. Working with three of our talented youth made this a very enjoyable experience. You will enjoy the new map drawn by Matej Sebo. He is 13 years old, already runs Green, and did a wonderful job re-mapping Bayfront Park in OCAD.

This standard event will be held in conjunction with the 2010 BAOC COOL Championships. So please stay until the ceremony if you have time and want to cheer on our enthusiastic youth.

Here are the course statistics:

  Course Length Climb Controls
  White/Course 1 1.7 km 50 m 15
  Yellow/Course 2 2.0 km 75 m 11
  Short Orange/Course 3/Sprint 2.4 km 95 m 11
  Long Orange/Course 4/Memory-O 4.7 km 145 m 20

In addition, we also offer the Long Orange course as a Memory-O. You won't get a map at the Start, but instead each control has a map fragment that shows the area to the next control. With 20 controls on the course, the individual legs are hopefully easy to memorize.

As one final note, I'd like to point out that right now the grass is often knee high. As a result, some of the boulders/boulder clusters are not very visible. You might encounter controls where you see the control way before you see the feature (boulder).

Driving Directions

From the Peninsula, North, and South, take Highway 101 to the Marsh Road East exit. Stay to the left so you can drive straight ahead into the park at the traffic signal where Marsh turns right into Bayfront Expressway.

From the East Bay, cross the Dumbarton Bridge. Go to the fifth traffic light after the bridge and turn right into the park.

There's a map here that shows the location of the event.
